Dressing up a Utilikilt
I have a problem. Looking at how to dress up a Utilikilt.
To help it is the Mocker Black Pinstripe http://www.utilikilts.com/company/produ ... ts/mocker/ shown here in the first few pictures.
This is a semi-formal occasion a wedding. I already asked if a kilt was OK, so that part was OK. Now the questions I have are what shirt and shoes. The wedding is in Wisconsin, I am not part of the wedding party just an Uncle. I would like to look nice with out being to flashy. The wedding is later part of Sept 24
One style restriction NO TIES!
Just an open neck dress shirt does not seem appropriate, my favorite shirts Tommy Bahamas seem in appropriate also. So I am kinda stuck for ideas.
One thought was modern knock off of a Jacobite Shirt they seem to only come in basic colors. Next thought was a visit to a formal Tux shop to see what they had for dressy shirts.
I need some help with ideas, links would be nice if you can find'em.

Re: Dressing up a Utilikilt
I just had a look at the page in question, and noticed that UK's "target audience" is the "Dockers" crowd, so it's only natural to ask whether anybody would wear Dockers to a wedding.
That having been said, you might be able to jazz it up a bit with a tuxedo shirt with ruffles or vertical pleats and a snazzy waistcoat or jacket. Instead of a tie, you might contemplate an ascot. Jacobite shirts (aka "pirate", "poet", or "puffy" shirts) can work stunningly well under waistcoats with the contrast of the form-fitting look of the waistcoat and the fullness of the sleeves.
So, there are a few ideas to mull over.
Congratulations, of course, to the happy couple.

Crfriend,
Thanks for the comment. Another friend also made the suggestion of a tux shop. I never thought of a waistcoat. --Brandy

Re: Dressing up a Utilikilt
Another vote here for the waistcoat, I often wear one at work (plain-ish leather) with an open neck shirt and have had some compliments on it.
"Semi-formal" is a tricky one. I'd go for a smart shirt, with the waistcoat. Personally I also always go for boots rather than shoes with a kilt. They don't have to be huge goth-rock platform and buckle things - I normally got for plain black leather non-metallic safety boots. Look reasonably smart and can be polished up to be nice and shiny. What you do for socks from there is up to you!

Re: Dressing up a Utilikilt
Back in the early 1800's there were a lot of popular men's sport shirts around with wide sleeves to closed wristbands similar to the shirt worn by Liam Neeson in the movie "Rob Roy" even though that movie was placed in the early 1700's. These shirts were VERY roomy even though always "tucked in" and usually had a leather string for closing the collar partially to give it an overall "loose" look.
I think that kind of shirt would look great for this usage with a Utilikilt, tall socks and flashes of whatever clan the wearer might be representing. Just a thought, kick it around and decide.
I'm sure whatever you decide on will be appropriate.

Re: Dressing up a Utilikilt
So here is what I came with so far.
With the Utilikilt a cream Jacobite shirt, cream kilt hose, black ankle height boots with this red vest any thoughts?

Re: Dressing up a Utilikilt
Personally, I've always thought vests made loose shirts look tight and uncomfortable, but, lots of people like and look very crisp in a vest, so "to each his own" like the "Old lady that kissed the cow"..slurp slurp..

Jacobite shirt....what was that line in Rob Roy? You and yours are Jacobites, bred to the bone..Line spoken by the Marquis of Montrose, regarding "His Grace, the Duke of Argyll" who really really looked like an old tyme Scot when trying to get Rob Roy to lie about him in court. (played by famous character actor Andrew Keir.)
