My black dress
Pictured here is a dress I recently purchased along with a print skirt I have posted elsewhere on this board. I bought the dress as an experiment to see how it would look on me. When I tried it on it fit just right. It is a little heavy being made of a valuore like material but not uncomfortably so. As a matter of fact it is quite comfy and I almost hated to take it off. I decided to take a pic of myself to see how it looked. When I looked at the pic I was not too impressed with the look and almost decided to shelve the experiment. This morning I thought about it some more and decided that it wasn't so much that the dress was wrong. It just needed something else. I got out this white turtle neck shirt that I haven't worn in years and put the dress on over it. With that and a pair of white socks the dress suddenly came to life. The outfit is a little much for this time of the year but it will look and feel great when it gets a little cooler. I took another pic of myself and I was blown away. I think it looks great. Opinions welcome

Re: My black dress
The second image with the turtleneck under the dress is a big improvement, and shows what layering can do for a look. The black over white is a very classic look, but I suspect other bright colours (e.g. reds or purples) could be used to good effect as well.

It is a problem common with tank style dresses. They tend to make the shoulders look narrow. Adding that extra layer helps to balance the look.

Re: My black dress
A few years ago I bought a dress very close to this to see what it would look like on me. It had really short sleeves which I didn't like so I carefully cut them off. I tried various combinations and didn't really like the look of the dress. Solution? Wear it with a t-shirt over it and it looks like a skirt! It was mid-calf which for me, was a good length. Unfortunately, somehow it disappeared...

I have one very like that as well. Find it very versatile, as it can be worn over a t-shirt or polo, as well shown by Klaatu
, or under something heavier like a sweatshirt or hoodie. The feeling of freedom around the waist is great, and the fabric is quite heavy which makes it swing nicely. It also fits really well around the torso, not particularly female at all. A wonderful wardrobe addition.
