OK, it's in protest, but well done to him for his efforts, and the pix of him look so natural and comfortable that it's well beyond time that skirts were worn regulary by boys to school. I think the phrase is "cool dude"!

Looking at the comments, they are mostly positive and supportive - I left a comment but it hasn't appeared yet. However, it never fails to amaze me how wrapping a piece of cloth around both legs instead of individual legs can evoke such irrational and negative emotions

There is a school district in the Dallas, Texas area that is infamous for being rigid in the dress code. It specifies that colors are to be solid. However, it specifies that a student of unspecified gender is permitted to wear pants, shorts, or a skirt. Boys may not have facial hair and they have restrictions on hair length.

Interesting to see that most of the negative attitudes that were shown earned thumbs down responses.
I'm not at all surprised by the inflexible and senseless dress code in question. Seems to go hand in hand with the mamby pamby Health & Safety steamrollering of playground conker game prohibition, and dodgem car driving with all due care and attention required in not dinging anyone else.
Ironically, lanterns which are set alight and floated off into the heavens by the hundred where they can possibly end up falling in a blaze of fire onto tinder dry moorlands are quite acceptable.
Good on the lad for showing some sense.
Pete.

Hi Pete, good to hear from you again.
Sorry, off topic rant over.
Have fun,
Ian.
One of my absolute pet hates. No matter how pretty they are, those flying lanterns are nothing more than litter looking for somewhere to land; it is not unusual to find three or four of them in a single walk. I have challenged the local environmental health department to show me the difference between throwing one out of a car window onto the hard shoulder of a motorway and letting it fly there. So far they have been unable to explain why one of those is littering and the other is not... I was however called a killjoy (probably true in this case).mugman wrote:Ironically, lanterns which are set alight and floated off into the heavens by the hundred where they can possibly end up falling in a blaze of fire onto tinder dry moorlands are quite acceptable.

Do not argue with idiots; they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Re: Boy wears skirt to school
Hi Ian, thanks.
Thought I'd maybe pick up a bit where I left off.
Nothing much to report though. Life is sweet. Still obviously skirting around. Still championing the kilt here in the sticks, though I'm sure most are wondering what medication I'm on.
Never mind, at least one of us here is finding contentment.
Pete.

Re: Boy wears skirt to school
I see he got support from the presenters of this morning's BBC breakfast program, who all turned up wearing skirts. Quote " It feels as great as I remember it when I wore a kilt. The freedom is magnificent,' he enthused.
Its a wonderful feeling. Quite honestly - I have a meeting in central London after this, if it were socially acceptable I'd wear this".
This is the stuff we need! On national TV.

I would hope that his male companions would follow his lead during this
protest. That would really get "things" moving

Yes funny how things change !erik the viking wrote:my mum would threaten to make me wear my sister's skirt to school if i was naughty. i'd jump at the chance now.

Meanwhile I notice in yesterdays Telegraph (UK) that a girls school in Somerset is banning skirts from next September, when the new school year starts. Girls will have to wear trousers "in order to enable all students to participate fully in learning activities, trousers represent a much more practical option".
High hemlines appear to be driving the change. I do remember, when I was on the PTA of my son's (mixed) comprehensive school, the headmaster saying that whatever length hemlines were set at (usually knee), some girls pushed the boundaries and raised them by several inches. However 10 years on, that school still seems to allow skirts as an option for girls.
