Bathroom signs

Post by jeanfor »

Do anybody knows if any legal action has even been attempted to ban the Men/Women signs represented by a skirted individual and an individual with pants? Like the Civil Liberties....

I rather doubt that any legal action has been undertaken regarding rest-room signage; it works reasonably well for the culture in which we live, although is has been lampooned in the past in cartoons. One memorable one shows a man in a kilt and a woman in trousers entering their respective segregated areas which were designated by the more or less "traditional" pictographs.

Personally, I feel no affront by the signage, and I happily breeze into the men's room (with the bloke in trousers staring me in the face) when wearing skirts.

Too, for our culture, vastly more women wear skirts than do men; however, vastly more women wear trousers than women who wear skirts. The symbolism is, in that regard, rather "quaint".

I'm a great believer in using small opportunities to project a positive, friendly image of men in skirts; so I rather like the pictogram signs. On a number of occasions I've found myself heading into the gents in a kilt or skirt at the same time as a woman goes towards the ladies. I can never resist asking her whether we are going into the correct rooms... It usually raises a smile and if that helps to promulgate the idea that guys in skirts are OK then it can't be a bad thing.

Have fun,

Ian.

Sorry, but it has always amused me as in the U.S. you say "bathroom" when there is no bath in there, we here in the UK say toilets and that's what you get.
If all bathrooms/toilets had cubicles why should there be two rooms they do in France

Aye:

A more proper application when looking for the 'Loo' in the USA - "Restroom".

So RichardA what can you tell me about the term or abbreviation "WC" (Water Closet) ?
Is that an old term to define the UK restroom (loo) ?

I believe it was Thomas Crapper that started the 'Throne Room' and elevated the end use to a new level !

LOL

"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

"WC" appears from time to time on architectural drawings here in the US, so, at least amongst those who are familiar with that millieu, it looks like that might be proper international usage. However, I know for a fact that if I ask some random body on the street where the "WC" or "water closet" is, I'll get a blank look.

As far as slang for the device proper goes, I have no idea how many nicknames there are,

I prefer "Throne Room" as there's really no place to bathe OR rest, there's no standing water for a WC, and many a gent sat on the throne imagining himself a king on a throne, i'll wager.

Actually, the terminology "Bathroom" comes from the late 1800's when real toilets were first coming into vogue in the USA. Prior to that anything of that kind of function a person had to do was done in an outside building called the "outhouse" with a board with a hole in it over a hole into the ground, and toilet usage was the only thing done there. Inside the house there was a room called the "Bathroom" where baths were taken in giant tubs made of iron or brass and sometimes more than 5 people were in them at once. They were like the forerunner of the modern Jacuzzi and when they were built inside country clubs at Golfing organizations, someone had the bright idea of adding one or more toilets and plumbing inside the "bathroom" so that more than one function could be accomplished there. This was a United States thing and was later copied all over the world with different names for these "bathrooms". :D :D :D When the "bathroom" was made smaller and put in single homes, one toilet and one tub with shower plus sink/mirror/ storage under the sink was put in a small room called a "bathroom" and is so to this day in most USA homes.
