Re: New kilt on the blog (as it were)

Welcome Finnkilt, I suppose it all boils down to how far you want to push the envelope but, I would, in that climate, go for an ankle length lined wool skirt. Here, in Australia, the need for this type of skirt is not that great, however I have an unlined wool skirt, which gets winter night use when...

Re: Boots

When the climate was a little wetter, about 3 or 4 decades ago, I would sometimes sport tonsured legs. I noticed other rural folks with the same 'fashion trend' at the time. When wearing gumboots (wellies in the U.K.) in wet paddocks over a long stretch of time, the hairs at the boot top line wear o...

Re: Michael Gove answers on Education

What about the attitude of the student, which runs the gamut of hostile, a teacher's worst nightmare, at one end to Malala and those like her who CRAVE education, at the other! I, for one, have teachers in my family for at least three generations and the teacher of today has an uphill task, in some ...

Re: Freedom of Movement

they had mutual truces for Christmas Day in the trench warfare theatre. Yes and Germany won the Christmas Day 1914 soccer match 2 nil! I've only just studied that war's origins and, maybe, we should learn from the event. This was brewing for nearly two decades before 1914, and Germany was being shu...

Re: short or long dresses, here some pictures for comments

All the outfits, by both of you, are worthy of consideration. Jack, I too have found the beauty of an unbifurcated garment in catching small items that fall, and would usually fall between the legs of trousers, and take another 5 minutes to find on the floor. Is that an old reel to reel tape you are...

Re: Freedom of Movement

I hate to be a wet blanket but, there was one big drawback to behaving like that nearly a century ago.

Re: Michael Gove answers on Education

Good on you John62, I was going to mention the dreaded 'naplan' tests as well. Not only does it score schools unfairly but also stresses pupils and teachers. I have two average granddaughters who are, frankly, frightened of them and a high achiever granddaughter who was encouraged to attend the test...

Re: Two Years, No Pants

Yes, I'm well thanks very much for asking  That was a very interesting "comeback" there. I was interested enough to go back to your original introduction, which I missed owing to my being off air in that time frame. That was very well crafted and, now you're back, I am hoping for ...

Re: Hello North Scotland

A belated welcome to you, halfabee. I am a member from Australia and have connections to the Ross clan. A thoroughly bloodthirsty lot, looking at the history! Though Sir Charles Ross Bar't., a 19th century Laird did invent a straight pull bolt action used, I believe by Canada in WW1. Maybe this is w...

Cavalry boots? Don't forget the spurs, they'll make a kick in the shins far more effective :alien: :bom:

Re: Boots

Funnily enough, boots for men were "in" during the late 60s and into the 70s. I was handed down a pair in the early 70s from my (ex) brother in law in about 1969. These boots, in a very light tan soft leather, had high heels and zipped up the sides. I can't remember what subsequently happe...

Re: men wear dresses in public, why not

Hello norstdresses, and welcome to the forum. Dresses are the bigger hurdle for men to cross than skirts, though this is illogical as the dress, as a male garment, was the last to disappear in the western culture. Just about a century ago for adults, and a little later for small children. I have thr...

Re: Tha Guardian comments on skirts Aug 2013

The old adage that, "Big boys don't cry" is about as fallacious as it can possibly get, and, taken to an extreme can likely cause serious mental distress to the bloke This is a good point when it comes to Post traumatic Stress Disorder known, nearly a century ago now, as shell shock. I se...

Re: Weather in NW Europe

We had a pair of Cordylines in our turn of the century garden in the Sydney suburb where I grew up. They seemed massive back In the late 50s through the mid 60s, but were no bigger than the pictures, both from Aotearoa and Ireland. Kirbstone's blanket chest is a treasure, the oldest thing datable in...

Re: Film and digital.

If you could afford the film, maybe older style monochrome which you could process yourself, that could be great fun for experimentation. My thought is, with a firm support or a tripod, some long exposure shots to turn waves into fog effect etc. Strap a neutral density filter over the pinhole for lo...
