Skirts for Men in France

I picked up this URL off the Atrium (thanks to Manu for posting it). It is an organization in France that promotes skirts for men.

http://asso.i-hej.com/

Two words: very impressive. They are doing what I've imagined doing, if we had the interest. They have articles like a magazine. They work with fashion designers such as Anders Landinger. etc.

Something to think about...

Interesting fashions. I don't read French (Spanish is more useful in my world) so my use of the site was somewhat limited. Since I don't resemble any of those models, I'd just like to see some male skirt fashions for well-gutted old farts like me, in the everyday brands I buy like Carhartt, Columbia, Dockers, etc. Something realistically obtainable for the common man.

Very interesting site!

I found google's translation software, while not perfect, gave a fairly understandable verison of the site: http://translate.google.com/translate?u ... uage_tools

The founder of "HeJ", the organization's name, is quoted (translated):

“The men wear clothing of the skirt type, tunic and dress since millenia and still today in certain countries, and this, without one finding that abnormal. I find regrettable that at our time in our countries known as developed and of freedom people put questions about a man who would wish to carry a simple fabric end (having for difference with the trousers only the seam of the crotch), even reject it for some. HeJ was thus created to return its normality to the port of the skirt by the men.”

Here's my paraphrase of it:

"Men have worn skirt, tunic and dress type clothing for a millenia and even today in certain countries this is still normal. I find it regrettable that even today in countries which promote themselves as developed and free, people still question a man who wishes to wear a simple fabric wrap (the only difference from trousers being the seam of the crotch), even outright rejecting him. HeJ was thus created to return the wearing of skirts by men to normality.

It appears to be a French equivalent to skirtcafe.org

Hmm, it appears this same HeJ organization has edited the Skirt article for the French version of Wikipedia:

(link to google translated version). Note the section on Men in Skirts

Well Developed Countries

To the unbelieveable inablity of so called "First World" countries to accept "Men in skirts" you can thank only one group of people. "THE PURITANS" that both ran England and later, when their beliefs fell out of favor "escaped" to America and brought their closed minded outlook about anyone wearing anything that "THEY" wouldn't wear should be ostracized or murdered. WE, in the USA Still have whole states that still think like that and our National leaders are STILL dressing in a way that reflects our PURITAN heritage. IE: black suits (or similar colors) and discreet clothing for every other thing they do. I've actually been told that American men have great leeway in what they wear...riiiiiiiiiiiiight..black, brown, dark blue, dark gray, dark blue with black pinstripes, dark brown with black pinstripes suits, white or off-white shirts, the only color they allow themselves is how many stripes are on their ties or how many polka dots are on their "Pocket patches"....let's not forget the either Black or dark brown shoes either..:(

Indeed, HEJ is a french non-profit organization that promotes skirts for men.
It consists of 50 members from France and its neighbouring countries.

The association had some success in promoting skirts for men, giving interviews in the media (TV, newspapers, internet), or through partnerships with dressmakers and fashion designers.
It also give support to men who encounter difficulties in wearing skirt.

Hiatus collections were created with the help of HEJ. In fact, the creators of Hiatus decided to make skirts for men after they learned about HEJ on the internet ! (http://jeanguyetco.free.fr/index.php?Hi ... our-hommes)

This is some examples of interviews they have given :

You can check their website (http://asso.i-hej.com/), the english translation is not perfect but it will give you an idea of the association.

Salut, Alsachti,
(je suis Martin22)

Something like skirtcafé, yes, but not very active on the web; very little discussion, which is not surprising as very few Frenchspeaking men are interested in skirts it seems. The founder of Hej himself is very active, as are one or two others, however; sometimes virulent in promoting unbifurcated rights, but I have not witnessed the proliferation of skirts around me.

Very brave of the Hiatus fellow to produce so many models for such a limited public.
