The "Great Kilt" came before the "Breacan" or Little Kilt. Most of today's
kilts are this modern(Breacan) form, making the kilt easier to wear.

This is "The Kilt", and most definitely NOT a skirt.
One point, the originals would not have been of such fine fabric or with the intricate tartan check.
It is very unlikely the original wearers would have been quite so fastidious in arranging the pleats.
Note too that said wearers were natives of the Scottish highlands and the Islands off our west coast.
After the Jacobite disaster of 1746, the wearing of the great kilt was effectively banned for highland men.
Note too that the Highland Gaelic speakers should be regarded as a separate ethnic group within Scotland,
Their language, customs, culture and dress were quite different, they were badly exploited and discriminated against by other, (lowland) Scots.
The death blow of the Great Kilt was dealt by tourism and commercial exploitation brought about by Queen Victoria's romantic notions of Scotland and more importantly the Scots peoples.
The little kilt is just a skirt by any other name, any argument otherwise is really based on myth and propaganda.
Perhaps the most enduring scam of all time.
