Male fashion freedom in movies and series set to modern times?

Post by zjo »

Nobody seems to notice when men wear skirts/kilts/dresses/pantyhose/high heels/makeup/etc. in movies and series set way past in history or the future because they are not relatable. Or they are trying to pass as a woman or it is portrayed as some sort of joke which doesn't help at all. Seeing them in productions set to modern times and in a casual way would however help our cause and normalize male fashion freedom. So, do we know any movies or series that feature male fashion freedom, are set to this time or the past few decades and don't depict it in humorous way or as a part of somesort of dress up, lost bet or pretending to be a woman?

I noticed a few casual appearances lately:

-In the Disney+ series "Only Murders in the Building" Season 2, episode 1, a man in a skirt comes to talk to Mabel.
-In the Amazon Prime miniseries "The Continental: From the World of John Wick" there is a side character who always dons a kilt. Set in the 70's but still quite relatable.

There's a thread on here somewhere about the first Doctor Who episode featuring the new Dr in which he started out dancing in a kilt.

I recall a play on TV that had Charles Dance wearing a skirt, tights and a woman's top and cardigan, also earrings, but not dressed as a woman (no bust, make up or wig). His clothing was never mentioned. Sorry - can't remember what it was called or anything else about it.

It's most likely you're referring to this clip from the dramedy film Ali G Indahouse (2002), which was most definitely played for laughs.

Nope. In the play I dimly recall he was much more tastefully dressed and it was a serious drama. So he's done it more than once - maybe he likes it.

More likely that he is also handsomely rewarded for doing it, cynical hat on!
On the other hand, if he wore skirts and dresses as a guy on a regular basis, we'd probably have heard already.
If he goes full on "femme" at times, nobody would know nor probably care, it's not newsworthy after all.

A few more:

-In the FX series "Fargo" Season 5, one of the male characters is always wearing a skirt. He is introduced a few scenes after a teenage girl is called a crossdresser for wearing a suit and I don't think that is a coindence. At some point somebody asks about him saying "have you seen a man in skirt go by?". I get the feeling that the writers really wanted to talk about fashion freedom which is nice :)

-In the Netflix series "Sex Education" Season 4, one of the male characters is given a dress and he swirls around in it happily and wears it to a party. He also wears another skirt to another party and often uses makeup and other "feminine" things. The character is gay but he isn't trying to be a woman nor identify as one.
-In the Amazon Prime series "Good Omens" Season 2, they have a lot of sexual minority themes and a male character has a spouse that is clearly a man and doesn't seem to act feminine but he is wearing a dress and has a very feminine style. There is no mention of the spouse's supposed identity or style so it's kind of a neutral appearance.

And then there is Corporal Klinger in the M.A.S.H. series - - - - -
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

"Frazer Simpson Frederick Hines (born 22 September 1944) is an English actor. He began his career as a child actor and appeared in A King in New York (1957) with Charlie Chaplin.[1] He later played Jamie McCrimmon in Doctor Who, appearing in more episodes than any other companion.[2] He was a regular in the series alongside Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor between 1966 and 1969, and made guest appearances in the 1980s stories The Five Doctors and The Two Doctors. He also had a long-running role as Joe Sugden in Emmerdale Farm between 1972 and 1994."
The Dr Who character was a piper for the clan MacLeod from the 1800s.
The kilt had less to do with fashion freedom and a lot more with the stereotypical view of Scotsmen in macho skirts.
The MacLeod clan is genuine highland Scots though, their pipers would have certainly wore kilts.
Not through simple choice, but because the Chief, his Master would have dictated it, extermination would have followed non compliance?
The piper's role in battle was especially dangerous, the noise he created made him a special target.
Just thought I'd add some realism, but it's a good story.

No worries,
Superwoman, Batgirl and Buffy will come to the rescue.
Aided by the Doctor, of course.
