Quoting Procedures Etiquette - A Trend

Hi Guys 'n' Gals :D

A "trend' has developed when it comes to quoting another person.
That person's ENTIRE post is quoted, only if the responding person is referring to one or two sentences.
That procedure takes up space and wastes the readers time. If the reader wants more information, the
reader may move up in the thread to read the entire "original" post.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS - The responding person is able to edit out the unrequired verbage.

Also, when replying to a post, just use the POST REPLY button at the bottom of the thread.
The quotation marks button, should only be used when responding to a specific portion of the previous
person's post, or to a response further up in the thread/topic.

EXAMPLE - If John Brown wrote 3 sentences but the responder was replying only to one,

This is a tree.
There is a cat in the tree.
The wind is blowing to hard for the cat to survive.

Wrong way-
John Brown wrote:This is a tree.
There is a cat in the tree.
The wind is blowing to hard for the cat to survive.
Who let the cat out anyway?
----------
Correct way is to edit out what is not required -
John Brown wrote:The wind is blowing to hard for the cat to survive.
Who let the cat out anyway?
--------
OR use the keyboard format {quote} .. {/quote}, changing the {..} to [..]
and copy/paste the portion you want to quote -
The wind is blowing to hard for the cat to survive.
Who let the cat out anyway?
--------
You may have noticed many "Old Timers" here, trim out un-necessary parts when quoting
another person's written thoughts. This is proper forum etiquette :!:

PLEASE try to follow proper etiquette when replying to a post.

THANKS for reading this :D

I must bring this topic back as many, many new members are quoting an entire
post when they reply to a portion of the post. You CAN EDIT OUT the unwanted
portions of the post, keeping the important part you're replying to.

As a courtesy to other readers, only quote what needs to be quoted,
not the whole post :!: In some cases, quoting isn't even required :D

An alternative - consider copy and paste ONLY the necessary portion - and then perhaps highlight in BOLD print.
It gets the crux of the subject matter across without a lot of further to do or fan fare.
Egads how I hate to reread the entire text all over again !

an easy way i found to only quote a specific portion of someone's post is this: click post reply at the end of a page at a topic, then scroll down and you will see all replies to the post, find the reply you want to quote and then select the portion of text you want to quote as if you are copying it and then click the quote button on the post once it's selected (if you need to answer to a whole reply then you can do the same but just click the quote button without selecting any text as if you are copying it).

i have tested this on mobile but if desktop and mobile work the same then it should work on both.

i hope this helps, greetings from Julius

I use a few periods ... to indicate that I removed non essential verbiage in the quote.

Neat, just tried it on my mobile, saves deleting a lot of lines.

I find it easier to just quote the whole message and then edit out the parts I do not need and then make my reply. :)
