400 is pretty old there are others but this one has been verified

Yes Jim this is very interesting and at that age, real tartan.
I say real, in that it was probably worn and produced in the local area.
NB this bears no relation to what is promoted as traditional clan tartan these days.
Those were an invention from the 18th and 19th centuries by some very astute entrepreneurs.

I love that colour. More interesting than most of the “official” tartans.

I may be missing something, but there doesn't appear to be any reference to a specific clan which is correct to my way of thinking as it pre-dates any of the "official" twaddle.
Anyone can tell me differently?

I was quite curious about that as well because modern dyes weren't around 400 years ago and vegetable-based dyes would make getting those colours quite difficult, indeed,

Very difficult, therefore also very expensive and well beyond the reach of a Highland Clansman.
Thanks Carl, I hadn't really given that aspect a great deal of thought.
I originally said that it was likely produced locally, perhaps not so close but still likely in the Highland area.
However, this certainly isn't the rough plaid that was produced for the common people, and which the Great Kilt was made from.
Actually, there is a story behind how it ended up in that bog which may never be told, no body preserved with it to provide forensic evidence like Otzi.
