And therein lies the controversy: One man's "clown" is another man's "bold self-expression". To much of the world, a heavyset bearded man looks like a clown just by wearing a skirt.

So... who makes the determination or draws the boundary between serious and clownish?

NB: If you literally meant "dressed as a clown", as in the comically oversized and misshapen outfits that actual clowns wear, I withdraw my question. Although if I really wanted to wind you up, I'd suggest that even there we get into a state of fashion judgement and presume that a person dressed that way is simply expressing himself without intentionally looking like a clown :D

All this talk of clowns.... I don't get it...

What does running for public office have to do with wearing skirts?

Note the original question Moon and some guys actually worry about what people think of their choices.
Would that politicians the world over show the same degree of mindfulness?
Clowns bring mirth and happiness to others, as for politicians, well no.
Steve.

Unless named Pennywise (or Boris).

Pennywise reminds me quite a bit of the McDonalds clown.
Boris, well, I wish he was just a figment of the imagination too.
Steve.

Being "taken seriously" isn't a concern for me. I just go about my business, happy and carefree. If the world wants to judge me by what I wear and not the person I am inside, well, that's their problem, not mine.

I started wearing skits years ago, the summer of 2011 I wore skirts every while on summer vacation and no one said a thing to me.
Based on that experience I made it a habit to wear skits whenever possible, ie. Not to the office.
I would pack a couple of skits in my suitcase when traveling for work to wear on weekends and have not had any negative comments that I can remember and I traveled >50% of the time much of it internationally all over the world.
I would meet with work colleagues on weekends while wearing a skit and they didn't have any negative comments about my skirt-wearing.

I retired on 12/28/2019 and have only worn men's pants 4 or 5 times since then.
The closest thing to pants I wear is leggings in the winter when it's cold.
