The topic came up at home unexpectedly, and so I had to look it up. Found this informative guide in case anyone was wondering themselves.

I've seen that graphic before. It makes no sense. Try it. There is not that much material in a long dress to go through the legs then tie in front.

Just pull the material up through your belt hanging down on both sides, making the dress or skirt mini length.

Or you can pull the material through your legs and put through the belt (front or back) to make shorts, but this is less secure and apt to pull out without extra care.

I would guess this would be less used for vigorous physical activity because of the hindrance of all that material through the legs and it making it less convenient to urinate.

I must admit I haven't attempted it (well done Jim), and I'm not sure I am even tempted to attempt it, however, I have found a clip of how to gird one's loins in a ball gown!

I sure would not go to a gun fight girding up my loins in a quicks draw contest !
Fine if you have the time before hand to get organized -
But this would not have made a difference with Brutus stabbing Caesar.
More practical to wear a tunic and not be encumbered by such excesses of material.
Now if you were a nomad out in the sand blasted desert there would be reason to have adequate coverage.
So where is this going - heck I don't know - who girds their loins anymore these days ?

If you have a long skirt on and are going up and down stairs carrying something, or have a need to go through tall weeds or deep snow it's a skill that can come in handy.

I seem to recall reading somewhere a belt was used rather than the tying technique.

Yes. The belt (formerly called "girdle") is part of the name of the technique. That's what my pictures (and not the manliness graphic) illustrate.

Oh, sorry. Out shopping at the moment - didn't read your post all that well.

Interesting, I have heard the phrase but too afraid to ask :)
Thank goodness I only wear mini skirts otherwise I would be girding-up incessantly, more likely to hold a trowel than a sword.

That video (with sound off) was mildly hilarious - shows that it can be done BUT you need to lave a voluminous dress/tunic. While I am not an expert on biblical wear it seems like they'd not have enough fabric to do so simply by tying.

There are a few members who prefer longer skirts. Girding one's loins might be a useful technique of skirtmanship.

Come to think of it-isn't the original Macabi skirt based on a similar idea?

Nope. Those were based around a system of snaps, ties, and lanyards. Different completely.
