I say well done to them for that! You always get the silly comments though!
Shame there are still lots of people that don't understand.
I had a friend that was working on the Glastonbury festival stage. They were band from wearing shorts he was telling me.
So I just said "you should have worn a skirt" he gave me the most horrified look!
But that's exactly what these guys have done.

This seems to be a recurring thing here in Sweden. A few years ago, we had male bus drivers wearing skirts for exactly the same reason.

Sweden is a big country so travelling times can be long, and many of the buses and trains here have no air conditioning. We have quite hot summers and I can well understand why this is an issue.

It's significant that they got the skirts from the official uniform store, rather than borrowing some skirt that could have drawn criticism. As it is, the public can see (do the public ever see the train drivers?) that it's not just a bit of clownng about, but an official acceptance of a different style of clothing.
Good news!

Stu : "A few years ago, we had male bus drivers wearing skirts..."

If I understand right, that means that the idea did not catch on, and after a while they were all back in trousers?

Will the train drivers' protest be just as short-lived?

I suppose the answer to that is, "It depends."

If shorts are allowed as a uniform option, quite possibly. The notion of guys shoving both legs down one tube is still a bit alien in the Western world, but who knows -- we may be near a tipping point (or at least I'd hope so). I don't necessarily see this as a "protest", but rather a call for options when it gets hot. I actually applaud the railway for its action in this regard; less open-minded organisations would likely crack down swiftly and hard; I especially like the recognition that to suppress this action would be discrimination.

So, it'll all boil down to whether a shorts option is offered for the uniform -- and that's what it's really about, too, is the organisation portraying itself in a "proper" light. It is worth noting that shorts options are available in some uniforms (a few delivery companies here in the USA come to mind as well as some of the older uniforms for the UK military).

This story also made it to NPR (National Public Radio, US):

Maybe for both passengers and crew alike, they will think, "What's the big deal?" We can hope that it will last for a while and the skirt wearers will get used to it and see how comfortable it is.
