This really could not be better advocacy at the Torch lighting ceremony .Hopefully we will get the chance to buy copies like the girls do every time the Duchess of Cambridge walks out the door .In my dreams! Still every little helps

A quick Google image search did not turn up any pics of guys in skirts. Lots of women in long dresses looking very elegant, a few pics of the self opinionated plonker running the show this year (I was at university with him and disliked him actively from the first time we met; very unusual for me). No pictures of skirted guys though, so I can't help feeling the advocacy value might be somewhat limited.

There is a video of the actual lighting of the torch and, safely out of frame for the most part, were several guys in tunics.

The womens' dresses were stunning (where's that "drool" smiley?) but would likely not work very well on the average male frame. From the brief long-range shots of the mens' tunics I got the impression that they were rather shapeless and boring.

What was shown on TV was the video feed of the lighting of the torch to start its journey to London.

Researching NBC website and Nightly News for the video feed .........

The men wore a short thigh length tunic in same pattern of the womens full gown with plenty of micro mini pleats through out.
Maybe a copyright thing but as with anything copies will be made.

This was the actual video feed on national TV NBC.

Damn commercial for the first 20 or so seconds and then the video.
The men and a boy are shown in the first few seconds of the 24 second video
and then it all the gals in the long gowns - hollywood type production !

The women's long robes are reminiscent of ancient statuary, but the men's ...? I suppose that to conform with ancient Greek tradition, the males should have been naked, but that would not be allowed on tv. Singlet tops with frilly skirts did not strike me as either traditional nor modern, and I can't see the outfit making the headlines, especially as the real athlete (as opposed to the entertainers) who would be carrying the flame away was dressed in mundane sport cover-ups. Now, if he had worn a smart running skirt or short straight tunic, then that would have made an impact on the world.

The outfits the men had on certainly looked comfortable for a hot day, when I saw the video they also seemed to move very nicely, it's a pity they where doing a ridiculous dance!

Thanks for the pics links to the Olympic flame lighting - the men's skirts look a little like this old poster for a very old film (full outfit is different.)

Completely unrelated to the modern Olympics, and more to the point where it comes to costuming, I recommend taking a gander at (and listen to) Vangelis' Mythodea -- a choral symphony mildly linked to NASA's Mars Oddysey mission and spectacularly presented at Athens' Temple of Zeus.

Especially get a look at the costumes on the choir -- and most remarkably the guys. The blokes playing the tympani are no slouches when it comes to garb either!

Amazingly, the orbiter is still up and running after slightly more than a decade in orbit around the Red Planet. Kudos, little one!

So it came to pass that I heard this piece, again one of Vangelis' that I'd not heard in years, and it brought me to tears this morning. These weren't tears of sadness, mind -- these were tears of absolute peace and joy. I was sitting in the once-and-future dining-room with my computers, Sapphire was in the adjacent room noodling away on hers, there was a cat slumbering atop one of mine, the music was on, and the lights on the disk array and comms gear were happily dancing; I'd been successful in some bug-stomping the day before and was just getting the first really big-picture results, and it just seemed at that moment that everything was somehow right in the world.
