Now I hope that no one minds me doing this but I thought that when I can I'll post links to pictures posted on Twitpic (It is semi-unoffically linked with Twitter - maybe better to say it is in the Twitter ecosphere for want of a better way of putting it).

Anyway, I'll post the pics I find (they are not ones I have taken - just stuff I've stumbled upon and any comments going alongside the pictures are NOT mine).

I personally won't comment (yes that's me being lazy, cowardly, etc,...) but am interested to see your feedback on the pictures I find.

As always, keep it constructive and friendly. If it gets out of hand then I guess admin will need to close the thread. Let's hope we can keep it going.

Looks like it might be the backend of a kilt rather than a skirt --

Wish we could get a full view showing the complete outfit.
The 'swish' of the material says 'skirt' to me. A kilt does not
'swish' that far under normal walking conditions. Not to sure
about the boots, but am intrigued by them - wondering how
the overall 'rig' is affected by them. I think the jacket/coat
is to long, but--how does it go with the outfit? Need more
pics. I really like the color combinations

Looks like a saffron SWK (or other kilt) to me. Pleats are deep enough. My Lennox kilt can sometimes swish in that manner, especially if there's a breeze. 13 oz wool, instead of the 16 and 18 oz of the heavier kilts I own. "Leg warmers" might be kilt hose that's between the boots and the knees. So, to me, looks like a tweed kilt outfit worn with boots, instead of shoes, and a saffron kilt, instead of a tartan kilt.

I only have one question about the photographer/commenter. I am wondering if he/she has a depth perception problem. In no universe I've encountered would that garment be referred to as a LONG SKIRT. It barely reaches his knees. The color aside from being saffron might also be the color of a Welsh kilt.

Welsh cilts are tartan. The Irish have the saffron colored kilts. They also have solid green kilts as well as county/family tartans, just like the Scots and the Welsh. But, yes, the person who took the picture/did the description has no idea as to what they're writing.

(Playing devil's advocate) That may make these comments more representative of how many people really view men in skirts than the supportive comments we sometimes get from folks who have actually thought about it...

I think that Milfmog has a point here. To most observers in western society the sight of a man in a skirted garment (other than an immediately-recognisable kilt) is so far outside their normal scope that they are, indeed, clueless on the matter. This can be forgiven as the casual observer may have nothing to base an opinion or rational observation on. That said, it does not justify negative commentary outside the "I don't like it" type which is fully internalised.

"I don't like" can often be translated as "I don't understand"; that is good as it is something that a friendly conversation can help to fix.

Well said. Anything that gets people thinking can hardly be all bad!

I said nothing negative other than it OBVIOUSLY wasn't a LONG SKIRT. If the reporter saw a long skirt in his/her eyes, she/he needs new glasses. As an aside, it also wasn't "paisley" it was tweed. Big fluffy beards are more masculine IMHO, than those beards like the Sheriff of Rottingham in "Robin Hood, Men in Tights", that men spend an hour or more a day trimming and shaping.

Yeah, I guess I was a little harsh in my comments on the page... Oh well.

Assuming I read them correctly, the references to negativity were to the comments made by folks viewing the twitpics, not to anything written in this forum.

I just wanted to point out that the people making those comments are almost certainly ignorant on this subject but that the good thing about ignorance is that it can be fixed.

PS Note to self: allow beard to grow big and fluffy... on second thoughts, don't. Mrs M would hate it.

It would seem that someone has made a comment on Twitpic about the original comment.

If I may break my own rule about commenting on the outfit in the picture, I don't think that this man looks that bad. In fact, I think the outfit is really quite a good example of a man in a skirt/kilt/whatever!
