That sounds like it was quite the good time. Kudos on going in "unconventional" attire.

The "Jack Sparrow look-alike" crack put a smile on my face, so fret not on that account!

Ok, I cheated, I waited until dusk and most of the kids were at the dinner table and went outside for a short stroll. There was a very nice breeze blowing and I found myself wishing I'd found a mini rather than a knee-length. Billowing skirts - wow! Well...'ruffles and flourishes' at the knees, anyway. Think this will work.

Made two loops and one car passed, they didn't slam on the brakes, pile out and take pictures and a neighbor pulled into their driveway and waved. Probably thought I had shorts on. Well...one foot in front of the other, and all that.

So much for a controlled experiment. Went out to the Mall and walked around window shopping at the stores. Fuelled the car and went to the grocery and on the way home went into a Taco Bell where I sat down and enjoyed a burrito and taco.

Lessons Learned
1 to 3% of those around me did a quick down-and-up glance and then smiled, with a few even saying 'Good Morning!'

Nobody else, just as in wearing my support hose, appeared to care, though they could have been doing double-takes behind my back. (1)

While not really an issue, I need to use one or the other free hand to smooth down the back of the skirt when sitting. Without doing that my knee-length skirt suddenly hits just below mid-thigh. In the car, not much of a problem as the viewing angle is constrained. Getting in and out of the car I think I handled okay, but more practice can't hurt. In the Taco Bell I usually sit at a table with high stools but chose a regular size table and chairs where I still had a sudden change to just below mid-thigh even with a smooth-down...but I had the table covering and kept my knees together in addition to wearing black underwear which matches the skirt.

(1) One time when wearing hose with shorts I was at the grocer's and a young lady and her boyfriend (or ?) came by and it was right out of a Laurel & Hardy comedy as after passing me, his head _snapped_ back to my legs, his jaw dropped and his eyes bugged out and the lady had to grabl him by the arm and pull him along after her.

Congratulations on seeing the comedy of such situations. Just be yourself and enjoy!

You look Normal

Post by ChrisM »

I was waiting for a streetcar, when a young fellow (30?) asks "Is that a kilt, a skirt, what do you call that?" The garment in question is a black above the knee linen skirt, that does happen to be pleated in front (not in back). I replied "You may call it a kilt if you need to, to give me permission to wear it, but I call it a skirt." The fellow was impressed, and burst into smiles. He high-fives me and says "That's the way to do it Man! It's a f----g skirt, and they can all just get over it."

Call it what it is, openly and honestly, most people will react well to that.
It's a skirt, not a kilt, baggy shorts or oddly made trousers.
I've now had a doctor appointment and shopped for tights and a new skirt, the hairdresser is well used to me now.
The latest, on Sunday, a purchase and some good coffee from Britain's favourite department store, John Lewis.
I worked there in another time and I'll admit being daunted despite the fact that anyone still there who knew me also knew about my skirts.
Enjoyable, but I stlll prefer the small independant coffee shop that I generally visit of a Sunday morning.
Steve.
At JL, the only reaction was a lady customer, a terse smile, no comment, no perceptible reaction from the "kids" serving.

I was in a "Mac Shack" a few days ago, the gal in line in front of me got an eyeful of my colorful, lower thigh length skirt. Just could not process it I guess, she stood there subtly shaking her head. I told her "Truth is stranger than fiction.".

Two-phase day.

I wore my black knee-length soft pleated double-knit skirt with a blue polo shirt, black knee socks and workout shoes to the VA Hospital where I got help from a maintenance person for the ER location, then spoke to a lady at Admitting and then a young male intern who triaged me to get a look at the infection (he ruled out a sudden development of a latex or adhesive allergy). Then a nurse called my name and took me back to an exam room. Doctor said it was likely an infection and gave me a course of antibiotics and sent me off. (I banged my shin into a steel bed-rail which drew blood, thought I'd been fixing it with Neosporin and various band-aids. Oh well.)

I headed off to browse through Old Navy for a plus-size denim skirt without any luck. Apparently the only way to get one is order it thru the online store. Browsed a few more shops and got one of those new Subway flatbread pizza things and a Coke Zero. To pass some time I observed how the ladies who were skirted carried themselves, sat down, automatically kept their knees together and almost reflexively pulled down a skirt that had ridden up too high on one side. She was in a high-low gray maxi. There was another young lady who had on the exact same outfit I did except she had a white blouse and a light-n-dark gray cape thing with beige hose and flats. Went to another mall which was on the way home and checked out a few stores and some more people, went into the games store and checked to see if they had any tournament chess sets (they didn't) and fielded a trouble call from the office and went home. Also found the wind had picked up and had to 'manage' the skirt on the right side.

Two prior days when I got home the young teenage boys living on the street were hanging on my neighbor's front porch, playing with the puppy. First time they sort of stared, second time they said 'how are you doing?' and I reciprocated. They seemed more used to the idea that time. :) That's three days with that little black pleated outfit.

Kicked back and did some computer work, then pulled on my swimskirt which makes a decent mini (black). Since I don't swim much, if at all, I'll likely use it as a walking skirt where I use a track, walk a couple laps, then walk 7/8ths of it (counting light poles) then sprint the last 1/8th and fall back to a walk and repeat until I hit my goal or can't sprint anymore, then do a slow cool-down lap or two. (1/8th mile track.) Came in, took out some trash to the garbage can and went in finally to change. Used the mirror and bent down from the waist to pick something up...yup, you could see everything if it wasn't for the built-in panties (or whatever). Freshly showered and shaved and ready to run the sound boards for tomorrow's district teen music competition.

Educational day. Fun day.

Very nice Darryl. Is your area of Kentucky urban, semi-urban, rural or? I live near Asheville and I don't think anyone would notice if I walked down Patton Avenue buck naked flying helium balloons from my personal flag pole.

That's a bold plan. Proceed with caution, eh?

Louisville, largest city/metro area. Definitely I move in an urban/suburban mix. Last time I was in a rural area was hunting on a friend's land near Caneyville. Hmmm...that would be a picture...long camo skirt (or medium with camo tights, maybe), camo t-shirt and rifle.

There are some who notice. May be wishful thinking but some of the ladies who've seemed to notice have either smiled (for one reason or another) and/or I've seen a (possibly imagined) twinkle in their eye. :)

Love my pull-up skirts. After my stint on the sound boards at church I just went into the bathroom and pulled my skirt on and pulled my shorts off, then went about my business. Not quite ready to make that presentation just yet, if at all. At least, not without testing the waters with some fellow staffers.

What I wore on an outing yesterday. The sun was out and the weather warm, perfect conditions for an above the knee skirt, and the black denim pencil skirt I wore is a favorite of mine as it looks great on me, especially with the walking vent (a.k.a. slit) in back. I went to a local branch of my bank to withdraw some cash, then to the main branch of the post office for a money order, downtown to my favorite comic shop, then across the river into South Jersey where I ate at a public fast food joint and finally, a nearby Best Buy where I wandered the aisles for a solid half hour. Despite the snug skirt, heels and a handbag, I was given my space and treated like everyone else I came in contact with, and that's all I ask for on my little adventures.

Well, not very far afield, but in some ways a little further than I meant.

Transferring some stuff to the garage, across the back garden. I have not been too shy about how one of my neighbours sees me dress, (in this case, a just below knee diagonal plaid skirt, thin sweater, opaque hosiery and sandals) the people who used to live there were pretty cool, and I think the new ones are more of the same. The neighbours on the other side, aren't there at the moment. The house got torn down, and 2 bulky in fills under construction are taking over. I had been somewhat reticent about being seen by the construction crew, having seen them and listened to them I had the suspicion that they "would not approve"

Anyway, it's Sunday, nobody there right? Hadn't heard any noise, either. Coming back from the first trip I saw from the corner of my eye 2 painters taking their break on the patio, I caught a snatch of conversation as their heads lifted to follow my path. On the second trip out and back, it was very obvious they were watching me, ....but utter silence. Would have loved to listen in after I was gone, but, then again, I suspect I wouldn't have liked what they said. Ah well, at least they weren't hurling their tools at me. GF suggested they might have taken me for tall older woman, think she is grasping at straws, I don't look anything a woman, just what I am, a guy in a skirt.

---SPAIN---

If it seems I have been uncharacteristically quiet lately, it is because we just returned from our Spanish holiday. I went cold turkey on internet for almost 2 weeks. It was a whirlwind trip...flew into Barcelona, then drove to Madrid, Toledo, Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba, Costa del Sol, and Gibraltar. It was simply too much to see in far too little time, but it was wonderful, despite the difficulty navigating in el centro de Madrid. You will note my face is a bit banged up, as I had an incident with low blood pressure on the flight over, blacked out and took a header during turbulence into the aisle. No serious damage; a cut, a couple abrasions, and a swollen shiner under my left eye.
