Halloween is done and over with - the question now (?) have you adjusted your wardrobe to wear skirts dresses kilts more often having found out how easy it is/was ?

Halloween is not something we celebrate any more and haven't done for over 10 years. Being in a quiet little cul-de-sac we don't get or encourage trick-or-treaters.

We never have celebrated halloween and continue to view it as an American invader that has more to do with commercialism. What passes for trick or treaters generally amounts to teenagers wearing masks and demanding money with menaces.

Midas, money? Money? The best they would get from us would have been a small bag of sweets. And we would never have donated to teenagers - far too old an age group.

Halloween for me has been cancelled due to lack of interest for 30-odd years now. I have always totally disapproved of that American import, trick-or-treat.
My problem here is the bangers & flares that get let off locally, frightening the bejaysus out of my dogs. Nov 5th doesn't figure here at all.

Disapprove of Halloween? I’ve heard of people not want to dress up, think it’s been too commercialized, think women costumes are too revealing but disapprove?

Why do you need to approve of it?

I don't know about other places, but here the general complaint is that we already have similar event, Sint Maarten, on the 11th of November which has been around for a lot longer. And yet various businesses get carried away and start doing Halloween events. So it feels to some people that it's just another example of American cultural imperialism.

It's not a question of whether I approve of it or not. If people want to do something then, go for it. But I don't need to go along with it.

As I get older and society is changing I find I disapprove of the over commercialisation of all 'festivity's' - promoted as an opportunity to sell more and boost profits. Another comment I heard was 'I don't need to be controlling my kids binge treat consumption."

But for those who wish to celebrate, go for it. Just like fashion it's your choice.

Guess that’s my question. In your post, you disapprove of Halloween. Why not just let those who want to do Halloween do it and those that want to celebrate Sint Maarten do so. If you don’t want to be part of it, don’t, but no need to disapprove of it. Just seems like an odd reaction to me.

I disapprove of people spending their money on plastic crap that they will throw away tomorrow. As far as I know, "trick or treat" was practically unknown in the UK until the film "E.T." became popular: before then, kids would make a mock Guy Fawkes figure and beg for pennies to spend on fireworks (or candy). Now I think the idea is gradually penetrating that your British neighbours may not like being blackmailed into handing out sweets to people in costume just because that's what Americans like to do.

I was rather hoping that the lockdowns and restrictions due to covid would kill the trick or treating. It seems to have succeeded where I live.
