The beer was wxcellent, pity my hands still have patches of toxic blue stuff which refuses to come off. Today after work I added some white boot-top anti-fouling to the boat and my hands. One more session with the white stuff and the boat will be painted and almost ready. Can't wait!

Sounds like a lot of work to do all on your own. Ever try wearing disposable 'examination gloves' ? ...They're the type we face workers wear to stick in peoples' mouths. I bring a crate of boxes of these home to the wifey so she can garden without spoiling her hands. I wear them myself when painting things and there is no loss of dexterity with them on, but they do offer total protection from chemicals &c. They would be available in small boxes from any chemist, I suppose.
Worth a try.

Re: Coping with life!
Boat painting complete at last and boatyard emailed to say, "right, done my bit, now you finish your bit and get it in the water please."
I did start off with surgical gloves, when sanding I found that when you drop your sanding block into the water bucket, you fill the glove with blue water when you fish the sanding block out again. Still it's the thought that counts!
I wore the gloves to start with when painting, my hands escaped most of the time until I picked up a sticky paintbrush after discarding old and sweaty gloves. Well I was getting tired!
Today, no gloves and no mess either, I'm getting better! It would have been good to get a coat of paint onto the topsides, but she wil have to stay scruffy for this year, I want it sailing, hopefully before the weather turns back to normal!

Tom,
Those gloves are generally useful for many tasks. However, they do nothing when harvesting walnuts. Your hands get stained black no matter what.

Unlike you "face workers", we people that don't make a living helping other people's faces look better can't (or don't know where to) buy disposable gloves "by the crate"..Kirb said: I bring a crate of boxes (0f gloves) of these home to the wifey so she can garden without spoiling her hands.

Surgical gloves come in individual sterile envelopes with a folded left and right glove inside. Examination gloves are similar in appearance, somewhat thinner and come in boxes with an oval cut-out in the top so they can be drawn out for use and discarded.
I did mention, Skip, that most chemists (or pharmacies) would sell them.
That's interesting about the penetrating power of walnut stain, Diana. I do know it's the very devil of stuff to get off your hands. We don't have a fruit-bearing walnut tree, so I haven't tried handling them of late.
Last Summer we visited some posh cousins of my wife's in Honiton in Devon, England who have occupied an inherited pile for nearly half a century now. The husband planted some trees including a walnut tree with a view some forty years ago. Recently their offsprings gave them a lovely circular seat +table and an extra half-circle seat for under this walnut tree. When we were there it was a glorious evening and the hubby made up some iced Pimms No. 1 and we sat and sipped it sitting under said tree looking at their idyllic Rural England pastoral view.....Nice!
The tree was heavy with nuts, which I assume they harvest.

Re: Coping with life!
Many of my favourite dog walking routes take me past walnut trees however I rarely manage to get any nuts from them. The day they are ready to harvest the local fluffy-tailed-tree-rat population strips the tree.Kirbstone wrote:The tree was heavy with nuts, which I assume they harvest.
However, that may be just as well since last time I collected a few walnuts I had to throw away the t-shirt I was wearing while removing the husks; it was stained beyond salvation. It's probably cheaper just to buy a few nuts for Christmas...
Have fun,
Ian.
