French: danseur = dancer (male). danseuse = dancer (female)

Ballet is one form of dance. One who pursues ballet, in Italian, is ballerina (female) or ballerino (male).

In contemporary practice, we use these terms inconsistently. Yes, we do use the Italian ballet-specific term (ballerina) for women at times, while its masculine counterpart (ballerino) is relatively forgotten. And we do use the French general term for ballet dancers who are men, although it's not really specific to ballet.

Frankly, as an English speaker, I prefer English. It's less pretentions: "dancer" or "ballet dancer" for men and women.
Bob... thanks a bunch for the clarification!

I have skirts like that. But I only wear them around the house in the summer.

a lot of people here have said it's a short skirt. that's fine. i'm just wondering what kind of shoes and top you'd wear with it?

I'd go for ballet flats or some kind of boots with it. Or sandals/flip-flops.

Tops are kinda hard. Mens' styles are usually too long (they go too far below the waist to wear well with a skirt). Women's styles often look funny with a flat chest.

I have a fairly long (for want of a better word) torso but relatively short legs, so I don't think tops would be too much of a problem. Don't know what sort of shoes I'd wear with this type of skirt though.

you can't have short legs unless they don't reach the floor!

Semantics, semantics! I think we all know that Monster Pete meant short legs relative to the length of the torso :buttkick: :hide:

i love the skirt. don't think it's too short, bit too fluffy for a man maybe. i've worn skirts that are about this length in public (with hose underneath though)
