When I was in high school, WAAAY back when, long hair was forbidden in wood shop class.
It could get into power saws and drill presses. Once(in 2004), a plumber with very long hair,
came to my house to run an auger snake through my drain. His long hair got caught in the
snake part and almost pulled his head into the moving parts. I had to get scissors to cut
him loose from the machine once it stopped.

Don't recall mention of womens hair.

I don't recall a reason or rational being offered for restricting the length of a man's hair. So I suspect that this was simply an attempt to shove men back into the Man Box/Man Coffin.

Thinking back to the late 1960s, and into the 1970s, longer hair on men came to be tolerated. More or less. Emphasis on the word "tolerated." Longer hair may not have been fully accepted by some. I would say that longer hair did not become conventional. So subject to back lash.

A warning to keep in mind regarding non-conventional examples of self expression, such as MIS, nail polish, diverse jewelry, etc. I suspect that many will see these as effeminate, and seek to use the legal system to stop it.
