A florist/gift shop/coffee shop in a town near me is staffed exclusively by women (and teenage girls) so far as I know as I have never seen a male staff member in there. They have a uniform - light green embroidered polo shirt and navy (or black - I can't remember) pencil skirt. I don't recall seeing any of them in trousers, although I doubt they are banned from wearing them and they might do so at times. The owner (Jackie) is a very funky-looking woman around 50 years of age with orange hair and huge glasses and a very loud voice. She doesn't wear the uniform and I recall she has a liking for animal print leggings. Make of that what you will. If a young man were to get a job there, no doubt she would expect him to wear trousers instead of the skirt, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if she would be relaxed about him wearing skirts like the rest of the staff if he asked.

I don't doubt that there are a huge number of "funky" owners of small businesses who'd take the same attitude.Stu wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 8:00 pm The owner (Jackie) is a very funky-looking woman around 50 years of age with orange hair and huge glasses and a very loud voice. I'd say that I know quite a few myself.

I read a Reddit thread earlier this week (sorry, can’t provide a link) about a woman who was sent home from work for refusing to wear a dress. It seems a VIP was visiting & all female staff were told to wear the uniform dress option. As the OP was experiencing her period, she felt that the trouser blouse option was more suitable. However, the management wasn’t having it & sent her home. The identity of the workplace wasn’t given, but I assume it was some sort of retail establishment. Que lot’s of advice about seeking advice from trade unions & legal action. Although trousers for female staff are normally allowed there, it seems the female staff were in fact being ‘forced’ into wearing dresses, even though it was only for one day.
As for other locations for compulsory skirt wearing, I have been to a couple of high end Scottish high end tourist destinations where female staff (including management) were all wearing tartan skirts & tights, so obviously a uniform requirement.
