As far as I know, that makes you the most geographically closest male skirter to me!

If you're ever up in the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee, hit me up!
I'll do that for sure. But where is the "Tri-Cities" area?
I'm actually in Haywood County, which lies against the Tennessee state line.
Moon, there is another member in KY, can't recall who, but maybe also closer to you. Haywood County is one of the nicest places to live in NC, IMHO.

Just noted it is Darryl, in Louisville, so still three to four hours from you. Bob is probably about three hours, given mountain roads, and I am six plus hours away, even with Interstates.

Bob, Johnson City TN is one of the Tri-Cities, though not sure any really qualify as "cities" unless placed in relation to "towns" in rural areas. In SW VA, I'm pretty sure Waynesville would be considered a city.

I can only imagine discussing a six hour trip as being "regional" as baffling to our brothers in the UK. :?:

^It's kinda like my referring to the western WA and NW OR region as the greater Portland-Bellingham metropolitan area. For the most part, that 300 mile stretch of I-5 is in suburban/urban terrain. There's about a 40 mile rural stretch between Kelso and Chehalis, then another rural stretch between Marysville and Mount Vernon, and again between Burlington and Bellingham, but, for the most part, it's one city after another.

Per google maps, Bob is just a hair over two hours, taking (from here), I81 to I26, then finally west I40. Coming from Surf City NC, it took us a little less than six hours to get home. But then again, we were burning 40 up going about 90MPH through the Raleigh Durham area though... Which by the way, I'd like to go to the beach at least for a day or two this summer. I'm not sure if we'll make it to Florida, and if we don't it will probably be a NC beach. We'll see what happens.

The three cities of the Tri-Cities region of Tennessee is Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol. Which is actually not accurately described as "tri" city (as to imply three cities), since Bristol is legally two separate cities, Bristol TN and Bristol VA. But Bristol VA is rather like the "runt" of the group, so maybe that has something to do with it. All three Tennessee cities and Bristol VA all have a city charter. In fact, there are several smaller "cities" in that market, such as Bluff City. Of the three, Johnson City is the most populous. I'm not too sure how Tennessee legislates municipalities. According to Wikipedia, there isn't a legally definable difference between a city and a town in Tennessee. In Virginia however there is. Virginia is the only state in the union to charter "Independent Cities", save for a few rare exceptions elsewhere. Meaning they do not fall under the jurisdiction of any county. They vary greatly in population, ranging from just over 447,000 (Virginia Beach), to just over 4,000 (Norton). City residents have their own constitutional offices, most have their own school systems (those who don't contract with it's surrounding county), and are not subject to county taxes. City residents have no county votes. Towns in Virginia on the other hand are under, and subject to the jurisdiction of their surrounding counties. Towns have no constitutional offices, and to my knowledge, all towns fall under the county school district. Town residents are also county residents and have county votes, and are taxed thusly. Town's residents pay taxes to the town and county. Bristol VA is an independent city in Virginia. Abingdon VA and Damascus VA are incorporated towns. Moon Shadow lives in Washington County VA, with the Damascus town limit going through his neighbors house... which means I just barely "skirt" (ha!) paying any town taxes!

This friendly and informative journey into Virginia municipal law has been brought you by one cold snowy day and Moon Shadow, a lifetime resident of the Commonwealth.

Actually, my wife and I take a trip down to your neck of the woods at least two to three times per year. She likes to visit Maggie Valley, and I am planning probably a weekend trip down there as soon as the weather is nice and things get a little green again. Looking forward to my first trip to the Smokey Mountains skirted.

Beautiful part of the country down that way.

It is indeed a wonderful place. If you get the chance go over into Catalooche to see the elk, but better when no snow or ice. And if you like COLD water, go to Sunburst for a dip in the Pigeon River...I recommend the hottest summer day for that. I've been skirted in downtown Waynesville. No problems.
