What do you guys think of this?

I don't think it's all that bad, and do recall that many -- if not most -- women have had semi-formal training in the matter from their mothers and various fashion mags that guys don't. Personally, I find it slightly more difficult to put together a proper and compelling skirted look than I do a trousered one; this is likely true because my own upbringing was completely and totally trousered once I got above about seven years of age (shorts being a common theme before then). However, just because something is "hard" does not mean that it cannot be done. Recall the famous words from a former President of the US in the early 1960s: "We choose to go to the moon not because it is easy, but because it is hard." I do not wish to trivialise those words, but they stand above quite a lot of noise in the general environment.

I can sympathise with women who have decided to ditch skirts and dresses for trousers and blouses, for such a costume does simplify matters quite a bit and likely makes getting dressed in the morning a few minutes quicker. Getting something just right takes work and consideration; I know that I frequently have some notion of what I want to do the next day before I even retire for the night, but that's also in part because I wear skirts to work as often as not. Interestingly, when I find my mind wedged (for whatever cause) and I cannot come up with a good look I revert to trousers because it's "safe" (I also do this when depressed, although there is a strong correlation of not bing able to think and being depressed).

I totally agree with Carl. Putting together a skirted outfit can be complicated, especially if you want something on the more "dressy" side.

For myself, when I just generally hang around the house, it is so much easier to simply throw on frump pants and a t-shirt. I know Carl hates the look, but it is so easy and I don't have to worry about getting it dirty. What I need to do is figure out some skirts that would take punishment and that I don't mind getting dirty. However, when it comes to gardening, trousers are a must for me cause I get myself all dirty. Having a bad back, I garden sitting down in the dirt

Another problem I have with going for a nice skirted look is shoes. As a woman you would think I'd have no problem at all, there are so many options. But I have funky feet that are hard to fit, my balance is lousy and my ankles like to turn in and throw me to the ground. I'm still recovering from a broken foot that I got when I fell off a nice, classic, modestly heeled pair of pumps.

In general, putting together a nice outfit (skirted or not) can be a challenge. The "I don't care" look is simple.

Sapphire,
For a skirt which is good to slum around in, will take sitting in mud etc. wouldn't a well made denim skirt work? as hard wearing as jeans but a skirt? There must be other fabrics which can take a bit of punishment as well. Still, a skirt does take a bit more attention to wear I suppose, which is where jeans have an advantage. I personally am sick of continually hiking up my jeans while we are doing the house rebuild, I am still wearing jeans and not a skirt even though skirts don't seem to keep working there way down my body, two simple reasons for this: the friend who is doing most of the work has seen me skirted, but only once and I still have the mental block in place. The main reason though is that the skirts I would wear because they are comfortable, pocketed and hard wearing, all cost £50 to £70 and I don't want them caked in plaster dust and waterproof tiling grout cement type stuff.
My ancient pair of jeans can get as dirty as they want, I just wish they would stay up!

Hi B&B,
Generally, I find denim skirts too stiff and then when I DO find something that works, its something to get dressed up in. Sigh. I have been thinking of making skirts/dresses from vintage apron patterns in inexpensive, colorful, washable fabrics.

To bring this back to topic, there are all kinds of considerations to be made when configuring ANY outfit. As you said in an earlier post on this thread: "it sounds complicated". Indeed it can be.

Going back to the outfit presented at the beginning of this thread, to me the complication is a matter of appropriate tailoring for the overall look. You look at the outfit and in some way, an error light goes on. Hence, putting an outfit like that together gets complicated for all sorts of reasons: colors, textures, proportions, appropriateness for the situation, etc.

Here is what I think right now of the outfit:

1. The jacket is entirely too long.
2. The skirt needs to be made of material similar to what traditional pants are made of.
3. Darker tights would look better with the black shirt.

I feel that traditional men's shoes would be a little heavy for a formal hose and skirt outfit. Perhaps pumps with 2 1/2 block heels would work the best since stilettos might look a little too feminine.
