Sailing

Post by ChrisM »

Hi Jon. Catalina 34 is a nice boat.

In the summers we live aboard a Columbia 36. (In the winters we live in our motorhome.)

The Columbia has been our primary residence for almost ten years now. She's a lot bigger now that there are only two of us (youngest child is at University.)

We keep her - as you may see in the sidebar - on Orcas Island in the State of Washington. Our plan for the coming season is to head up north, with the hope of making it at least to the North end of Vancouver Island this year, and then making the leg to Alaska next year.

I have almost zero experience sailing on the Lakes, however.

All the best,

Chris

A man in a sarong in a famous movie

Rent "Dead Calm" Actors Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill star in it. Character actor Billy Zane plays the bad guy, who spends quite a bit of his "on-board" time wearing a red sarong. :)
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

To Chris, I like the idea of living aboard, trying to turn that dream into a reality. Living in a house, in a community with utilities gets awful expensive and I feel almost enslaved to this setup.

We sail Lake Erie which is the shallowest of the Great Lakes. The biggest problem with it is during high wind, it develops steep, closely spaced waves which can pound the crap out of you. They come up very quickly, you really have NO chance to get off the lake to protection when things change. I can't tell you how many times I have pulled up anchor in the middle of the night to get off the lake because of wind / wave conditions.

We are going to take the boat up to the top of Lake Huron this summer and back --- roundtrip of 900 miles. We are planning on 5 weeks to do this -- this will be our longest trip ever and will help us decide if we are up to taking it even further.

Dead Calm, wicked good movie, highly recommended. Didn't notice the sarong on previous viewings, gonna have another look!
