BBC Radio show from 2002 discusses Men In Skirts

Post by boca »

I found this snippitfrom the BBC Radio archive on Men in Skirts from 2002. It was initiated by the "Men In Skirts" exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the United Kingdom. It's about 13 and a half minutes long, and is basically a roundtable type discussion between several fashion experts about the history of men's skirt-like garments and the current movements within this area.

i just had a listen to that and it's very good. they dress a guy in a sarong and walk him round london to listen to various comments from people, probably focusing on the more outspoken. but it's a very even-handed broadcast and there is real interest and enthusiasm on the part of the women.

they make a good case that kilts have the right weight and proportions but they also discuss other options, emphasising that sarongs are very flattering to the figure. it took a while to load up but is well worth a listen.. very heartening!

i'm going away this weekend to stay with friends, and taking only kilts, sarongs and some denim skirts! gulp!

The BBC and men in skirts

Post by Tim Stannard »

As some of you may know, I have my own website dedicated to men in skirts.
I have recently moved it from the original web address to a new one, although the site is still up at the old address, http://www.stannards.co.uk/Kilts.htm I have just copied the entire page to the new home. http://www.bobclops.co.uk

Back in 2003, I was contacted by a lady from the BBC , she had found my site and wanted to know if I would be interviewed by the late John Peel on his BBC radio show. After a bit of thought I agreed.

Suprisingly the item is still available to listen to on:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hometruths/ ... _man.shtml

I thought it would have been deleted by know.
HOWEVER! I hadn't thought through the potential consequences, as I had not realised just how many people I knew, listened to the programme.

While the thing was on air I received two phone calls, one from my brother in law and another from an old friend.

Customers said they had heard it and anyone in my town who wasn't aware of my skirting soon knew all about it.

The reaction at home, well lets just say, " it hit the fan!"

On the other hand, the amount of positive remarks, and supportive coments outweighed the negative ones.

If you want to out yourself, going on national radio on a Saturday morning to an audience of thousands is quite an effective way to do it, as I found out.

My Son is speaking to me again, but only just!
While I was sitting and reading,
a thought just entered my head,
If I can't wear a skirt while I'm living,
I certainly can't when I'm dead!

i think you're right: once you've done something like that, you can't be too worried about people's reaction. that's it! it's the BBC for me!
