I grew up in a house with a rotary dial telephone at the bottom of the stairs on a party line. My father worked for the telephone company in the training department, so I got bits of telephone equipment to play with, hence I still play with wires and equipment for my job.
I remember the day when there was a car parked in the road we played in, with a telephone between the front seats. It had a handset just like the telephone in the house, but in a car!

I was born in 1963 and I think the telephone is the technology that has changed the most during my lifetime.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

Most of what we call telephones are computers with radio connections. I'm just wondering when the "beam me up Scotty" feature will finally be added.

As a child(Born 1951), in the small town we lived in, we did not have a "dial tone".
The phone had a crank handle. Turned the crank to get the operator's(Central) attention.
She plug in, asked what we needed, then connected us to the rest of the world.

Last I knew of, The Phone Company building is still there but with automated equipment.

Yes, the forerunner of Facebook with large party lines where anybody could eavesdrop on a call. The story in this town is when the system was first installed, like Morse Code everyone had their own "ring signal" -- if you were two shorts and a long, you picked up; but perhaps your neighbor(s) did too! Here, one lady was known for listening in on all calls, her name was Stella and the system became known as the Stellaphone. She only passed a few years ago and remains a character in our local lore. :shhh:

Interesting ideas regarding fungal products. I suspect we will have a fungal future here on Earth.
