Theatrical kilting

Post by Myopic Bookworm »

If you would like to see some stylish theatrical costumes inspired by the men's kilts of ancient Egypt, check out the male dancers in the Metropolitan Opera production of Verdi's Aida (there are some clips on YouTube).

Impressive. Nicely made costume kilts, which would be fine to wear normally. Wish I were 60-65 years younger!

As Kirbstone says "costume kilts".
If that look appeals go for it. a skirt by any other name, why not?
Probably pricy I'd imagine and certainly not to my taste.

Why under "skirts: instead of "kilts" as clearly that was their intent that this thing is a kilt?

If you mean placing the post, I thought about it quite a bit, but reckoned that the "Kilts" section of this board is principally concerned with discussion of traditional and utility kilts, whereas this thread is labelled "skirts and kilts for men", and relates to Fashion rather than everyday wear; so it seemed appropriate.

Too, what the ancient Egyptians wore were not "kilts" in the true sense as (1) they would have been made of linen, and not of wool and (2) would have been vastly lighter than Scots kilts due to the comparative temperatures of the climates. Thus, it's entirely incorrect to conflate them with Kilts.

The actual heading of this topic is Skirts and Kilts for Men
Which is probably the best fit becaue the outfits are not kilts but even so Kilts are skirts as well.

Herein lies a giant family ultimate economy size can of worms.
Let's just agree that the dancers' "costumes" were very nice and leave it at that.

No biggie, no worries, no controversy -- just curious about the selection -- insight into how these things are considered. As long as there is not more than one hole to find, I'm good!

Faldaguy, the world would be a much easier place if everyone took such a stance.
Oddly enough though, had the dancers been female, there would have been no comment at all.

I expect there would be even more comments as the dancers were topfree. The sexist attitude toward women following men's style here is stronger than the sexist attitude toward men in skirts.

I thought someone would pick up on that, thanks Jim.
However, this is classical ballet and not some strange burlesque.
Bear in mind too that the dance is highly athletic and bare breasts of any size could have been most uncomfortable and I am sure those guys' assets were also well supported.
That is common sense not sexist!
Like I said great costumery, choreography and not anything to get excited over in terms of men in skirts.
Steve.
