Go for it SJ maybe you'll bump in the same guy. That would be great. If we had more of a chat I would have said about the cafe.
I don't recommend going out on deck.

I had a bit of an issue with wind lifting my skirt (Utilikilt) on a boat once. I was covered, but still an issue to be mindful of on watercraft in motion...

A more fitted skirt would probably have solved this problem. I've never seen a straight skirt lead to a "Marilyn Monroe" moment.

Seems to be a trade off, Dust. Yes, narrow skirts are resistant to being lifted. However, you have to be careful how you sit, so as not to expose yourself.

It made me laugh on the boat. No ferry journey is complete without a trip out on deck. I knew the peril I was risking and windows all around, so noone would miss the spectacle.

It was not a case of if but when so I did not hang around long. My daughter said it's rule number one on boats. She woukd not go out there unless wearing cycling shorts underneath.

I too have taken that same route (Newhaven - Dieppe, and back) in 2023 and 2024, both times skirted, for two holidays in Normandy, for which I was also skirted throughout. The only remarks or verbal observations from anyone during either period was from a cashier at the LeClerc supermarket in Étalondes, asking if I was part of a group of Scottish supporters going to a football match in Paris. On our final day of the 2024 holiday, we had a panic when I found that our car had a flat battery, and I had to rush about in the village, going from door to door, trying to find someone with a set of jump-leads to get the car started; no-one even then paid any obvious attention to my skirt! (And we got the car started in time to get the ferry at Dieppe.)

My wife and I walk early every weekend/Holiday morning in town on a rail-to-trail multi-use path, and I always wear a SportKilt hiking kilt because it's light and airy in the hot and humid weather. I see a lot of the same people each time and everyone is generally friendly, and I'll get the occasional comment maybe once every few times and it's almost always women doing it. This weekend I had the "I like your kilt" comments from women every single day. 8) Monday one male cyclist went past us going the same direction, then slammed on the breaks and looked back and me and said "that's an awesome kilt, man!" then took off again to catch up to the woman he was cycling with. 10 minutes later a woman crossing the street behind us shouted out "I really love your kilt!" and I thanked her. My wife muttered something to the effect of "well if everybody loves them so much, then why is my husband the only one wearing one?" It would be nice if I saw some other guys doing the same, but maybe I'm planting the idea in their head. One of these days I'll switch to one of my Purple Rain "kilts" and see if the reactions are any different.

The other day, I was unpacking my shopping from my car (parked in the street).
A young chap, walking by, stopped to compliment me on my outfit. :)
He thought that my bright red, roll neck jersey went well with my black and white, houndstooth-patterned skirt.
I was also wearing nearly black tights (pantihose) with high, block-heeled loafers.

This morning i needed to go to the dollar store. I was wearing my red/blue checkered shirt, and my blue kilt. Had a nice compliment from the 2 lady's i held the door open for. "i love your skirt"! loud enough so everyone in the front of the store could hear. i smiled and thanked them, and continued on my way

When some guys came by to pick up a few of the squash we'd grown for the food bank (They just took 15 banana boxes full, about 15%), one said, "You look great in that suit, Jim!" (I was still wearing the skirt I had on for church this morning and had thrown on a sports coat as it was a bit cool out.)

Compliments in spades: Today I received not only another of those rare male compliments, but with the word "beautiful" (not sarcastic) from a man. Not only did this chap tell me my skirt was beautiful, he later told my wife the same and that he admired the way I coordinated the colors with the rest of my outfit. I don't believe I've had a male use the word 'beautiful" before -- typically the men restrict themselves to "nice skirt" or "I like your skirt/style" and leave it at that. Later I also got compliments from two women I was speaking with -- so, compliments in spades.

Yesterday I had worn the same skirt, with a different shirt, socks and shoes to an open house viewing; the local farmer's market; and grocery without any comments. I don't much care for the asymmetrical hem, but I do like the 'spring-like" colors and feel of it.

Mouse -- I need to find/review your advise on how to get pictures in public without it drawing attention, so that the picture reflects how everyone is simply doing their own thing and a man in a skirt is no big deal: as I think those are the kind of pictures that will help assure newbies that wearing their skirts in public is a non-event, that nobody gives a hoot -- the world continues as it normally does. I think you had some sort of remote trigger for a cell phone with an attached stand?

Meantime, here is my poor substitute; picture in a mirror:

The skirt is very nice and I think the hem is fun. I would carry on wearing it since you are getting good reactions from others.

I have no secrets. I use one of these cheap bluetooth camera shutter release CamKix https://amzn.eu/d/b630Yh0 things and my old iPhone 12 with the front facing camera. I have the CamKix on my keyring so I aways have it.

Before I am going to take a picture I get both my phone and the CamKix out and switch the CamKix on. I make sure the CamKix and the iPhone are connected on the Bluetooth settings page. This is sometimes a bit hit and miss, but turning the CamFix off and on again usually fixes the problem. I then set up the camera to be the front facing one making sure the screen is clean where the camera is. Then when you are all systems go, you then set up the shot. I just use whatever is around to prop my phone up. In shops there are many shelves, in the underground station I usually use the wall with my phone standing on the floor, car parks I have used the kerb.

I am always worried about phone thieves, especially in London, so I go for the end of the platform, well away from anybody. Be very aware of the situation around you even when you are just setting up your phone. Since I have no extra kit, my set up is always ready to go, so I can set up and take a few shots in seconds in the middle of my working day. With the threat of phone theft, I normally try for somewhere quiet and always where I am closer to my phone than anybody else by many factors. My fear is always some lowlife running in and snatching my phone.

The last thing is, when you are done, remember to switch off the CamKix. I have forgotten in the past and end up changing the battery. I normally focus on getting all of me in the shot and don't worry about the framing. I then fix the framing and the pixel count in the computer before uploading to Flickr and posting here. I normally take 4-5 shots and try different poses for each, then I get to choose the one I like to show the world. If I don't like any, I will delete them and forget I ever took them. The great thing about self photography is you get to be the editor as well, so you can try embarrassing things and if they don't work then nobody has to know. I have great fun taking pictures of myself in skirts.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of being at the big open marketplace in Funchal. I was wearing a skirt, as I do almost every day and while there I found a cork cap to wear because my regular hat catches so much wind it's like wearing a sail. Anyway, I came around a corner, and one of the local vendors said loudly: "Hey man, I like your style." He was so loud that several people stopped to see what he was talking about. I thanked him for saying so, and my SO squeezed my arm tighter. I think it made her feel better than it did me.

Santa likes men in dresses. This evening about a dozen people from our church sang Christmas carols at a free community dinner. A Santa appeared and gave presents to the children. He came to us singers, expressed his appreciation, and told me he liked my outfit. We both were in red and had big beards. I started the caroling with the black jacket on, but had removed it because of the heat before the Santa came by.

Merry Christmas to all!
