Trendy

Discussion of fashion elements and looks that are traditionally considered somewhat "femme" but are presented in a masculine context. This is NOT about transvestism or crossdressing.

Trendy

Post by DrFishnets »

My partner thinks I look trendy the way I dress in skirts, dresses, tights, leggings, Dr Martens etc. However, I feel I’m starting to dress the way a teenage girl or young woman dresses and I asked my partner if that is so and she said I do dress like that but I look nice and trendy. I don’t know if I do it subconsciously but I enjoy mixing skirts and t-shirt mini dresses (sometimes midi dresses) with leggings that go down to the top of my calves with black fishnets from my calves down to my feet and Dr Martens. It troubles me that a middle aged guy should dress that way but I really like the style and it makes me feel good about myself.

Thanks for the heads up Tom. Yeah she really enjoys seeing me dressing to go out shopping and always compliments me. My friend at my guitar group also compliments my skirt wearing and she also says I suit it.

I guess it’s just in my head thinking it’s weird to dress the same as a teenage girl and young woman when I’m a middle aged guy. Before I wore skirts and dresses I really had envy for the choice of style with clothes young women and teenage girls had that I wanted to dress the same even though I’m a middle aged guy but I’m glad my attitude to clothes now is that there is no gender divide in clothes as long as they feel and look good on.

I’ve also started wearing long knee length black opaque socks over fishnet tights or sheer black tights/pantyhose which teenage girls also wear.

As Tom says, partners and friends like these are pure gold and you are very fortunate.

We are already taking what we like from the other side of the shop, so I don't think it matters that the shop is for younger women. I also use skirts and other items made for younger women. As long as the item fits you and works with your style, then happy days. Your brain will catch up with the happy vibe.

DrFishnets and Mouse, you both blow me out of the water with your flashy outfits. I, on the other hand, wear conservative dresses that an older woman might wear.

I tend to stick to black or dark colours in my outfits. I guess when I say I dress like a teenage girl it’s more of a goth girl or rock chick look. I’m going to start experiment with brighter colours like Mouse. I just need a bit more confidence wearing brighter colours that Mouse looks great in.

Thanks. I’d love to post photos but I’m a bit worried about my photo being on the internet. I’ll see what I can do. I’ve still to buy that Bluetooth camera remote device. Once I lose a bit of weight I’ll consider it.

Sorry, I don't mean to put you under pressure. You should do and share what you are comfortable with.

I am free to put pictures of me on the internet because I no longer mind anybody knowing that I wear skirts. I also no longer feel ashamed of my wish to wear skirts, leotards, heels, earrings, stockings, nail polish etc. As I travel around London, anybody can take my picture, some even ask!
I have decided that by being out there, I may help others to take up skirting....

No worries. It’s great to know you are interested in my skirt outfits for to suggest me putting up some photos and no way do I feel you are putting pressure on me. It’s great that there are guys like me, you and the rest of the members on this forum who are making a statement that it’s alright for a guy to wear skirts, dresses, tights etc.

The ironic thing is that I’m worried about putting up some photos when there is a possibility that someone has taken a photo already of me out in public without me knowing. Anyway I’ll stop getting paranoid and enjoy what I wear.

I recently bought myself a long denim skirt with a front zip and pockets like on regular jeans that were reduced from £20 to £6 at my local Asda. The denim skirt has a front split but it still looks nice.

I think that to some extent skirt styles that look good on men are those which also look good on young women who are not markedly feminine in body shape: hence the tendency of skirted men to favour styles associated with younger women who don't have big boobs and hips. There could be a similar effect with dresses: men without breasts look better in dresses designed for people without breasts, including pinafore dresses which are, for the same reason, often worn by younger girls. It can then become a concern to avoid the school uniform look. (I also find the school uniform thing awkward because I like kilts at knee length or slightly shorter, but wearing these with black tights, I could end up looking like I was parodying the uniform of at least two local girls' schools.)

Yeah, as I have said above I do like the skirt and dress styles for younger women. When I see teenage and young women wearing nice trendy skirts or dresses with black tights and men’s boots I think it looks fantastic. This certainly is an influence in the way I dress when donning a skirt or dresses. I love pinafore dresses, long skirts, pleated skirts and t-shirt mini dresses. However, I have a bit of a big bottom, belly and slight man boobs with being overweight.

I sometimes wear black tights with my kilt but it never crossed my mind that I might look like a schoolgirl until I seen the local high school girls wearing a similar tartan kilt skirt with black tights and I felt a bit awkward. Now I wear nude coloured hosiery with black socks when I’m wearing a kilt.

Wear what you want, not what others think. If your girlfriend is happy even better. Many on this forum do not have supportive partners.

Your style is not my choice, but that's the beauty of clothing, it reflects the person, their personality. I wear more 'conservative' female labelled clothing. We are all different yet many, thankfully, accept and acknowledge differences. Be you, be yourself I say. Enjoy life, enjoy being you. Your questioning of yourself, middle aged man etc applies equally to women but they wear what they want regardless of others.
Be yourself because an original is worth more than a copy.
