The columnist appears to be chicken-hearted and afraid to step outside the bounds of his local box. I can't see that the article adds anything useful to the conversation; and certainly not to simply getting guys to step out in their skirts, or 'non-conforming' attire.

I, for one, get my clothes from the Women’s department.
Why, because the Clothing in the men’s department is boring.

It's insipid and non-commital, but I feel that's a sad reflection on societal attitude to MIS rather than the merits of the article.
It's all about tacit tolerance, but a long way from advocating full acceptance for non conforming men.
Bear in mind also, there are the Hijra in India where certain behaviours are accepted but within strict boundaries.
However, men dressed in male garb are expected to behave accordingly in the conventional sense within a fairly conservative society.

I got from this, a guy that is waiting for permission and coverage from other guys wearing skirts, so he could may be try one out. He has many reasons why it is OK to wear skirts, but his last sentence tells you all you need to know.
I, for one, get my clothes from the men’s department.
With the way that women have moved into trousers and even when they have skirts, many now come with shorts attached. I do not see a mass of men running for skirts even if it was totally normal for men to have skirts.

I think the best we are going to get is more acceptance and choice to wear skirts. Yesterday eight guys in skirts met up in the centre of London, having traveled there on public transport, and had a very enjoyable meal and chat. I for one had no problem getting there or moving around the city, even though I was wearing a floor length white skirt with a full petticoat underneath.

Umm - this article is written by a woman so by saying she buys clothes from the men's department she is highlighting the double standards in society about who wears what.

I missed that totally and read it as someone speaking from the male view point. Thank you for correcting me.

As you say, it does hi the double standard.

Mouse, I started reading assuming the same as you but when I got to
I knew that it wasn’t a saree, which my mom wore. It also wasn’t anything like what I wore to school, which was a pinafore.
I began to question that assumption and checked.

You were paying far closer attention than I obviously did.

Double standards for clothing? I don't give a hill of beans if a I purchase a garment from the men's side or the women's side as long as it looks good on me. This morning I wore a v wrap-around neck floral midi dress complete with earrings, makeup, painted nails, and heels. It will be cooler next Sunday, so I'll wear a man's coat and tie oufit for variety's sake.
What really irks me is how so many women don't use their privilege to dress up. Most men, unlike myself, feel constrained to wear nothing except coat and tie outfits for formal wear.

I agree with you about the double standards Susie and wish that it wasn't so. :(

Alakananda Mookerjee's profile says that she lives in Brooklyn, New York City, USA, not India.
I suspect that Alakananda's clothing purchases from the men's department are mainly worn around the the streets of NYC? Possibly the fashion capitals in Europe too such as Paris and Milan?
