A poodle?

OK, that's a bit snarky, but I really believe that blood-sports -- and boxing is one -- should have been banned by international protocol some time ago. We eventually did away with gladiatorial combat, didn't we?

I attended a bullfight at the Correda del Toros Barcelona in 1965 and was frankly appalled at the spectacle. They still do it, nearly 60 years later.

One of our residents, one Conor McGregor has made a fortune out of a form of free-for-all boxing that's not far removed from gladiatorial combat. His 'sport' is popular, well subscribed and is a legal/sanctioned form of GBH in the ring.

On a brighter note, Muhommed Ali entertained the World until ageing slowed him up so the punches hit home and no doubt contributed to his fatal Parkinsons.
Here we have one Katie Taylor, Olympic and current World LADIES' boxing champion and a beacon for a lot of younger aspirants to that sport, but ladies' boxing does not register among my spectator interests.

Just in: Half-time score at the Coliseum. Lions 15, Christians Nill. I'm sure Hollywood paid Charlton Heston, Russell Crowe & Kirk Douglas et Al plenty of money to act out their parts in that role.

I had a good trawl through "In the news" before starting this thread, thinking that this is where to find a thread about a news article. Oh well, some you win, some you lose.

One quick tip: before I post something I search for articles by ID or domain name. For instance, search for "queerty" or - just looking at the URL the number looks suspiciously like an ID:

20230418

The text parts might change but there is a good chance that number is an ID in their database.

No hard feelings either way - just some suggestions.

I’m of the mindset that it’s better to post something twice than not post it at all. Given we’re looking for articles that clearly do not dominate the headlines, better to be overly comprehensive than err on postponing posting potentially previously proposed publications. Any language specialists here?

But if that was the Corrida de Toros on the Plaça d'Espanya, they do it there no longer. Eight or nIne years ago, it was adapted into an unusually splendid shopping centre.

Hi ScotL

I’m not a language specialist but I do recognise a particularly impressive piece of alliteration when I see one!!! Well done.

Ha! Thank you for noticing! I’m no specialist either but it started rolling out with the “p” starts and so I just had to finish it.

A long-deceased former Scottish friend in praising some action or other would frequently make use of the word 'Perspicacious'.

Tom

per·spi·ca·cious
/ˌpərspəˈkāSHəs/
adjective
having a ready insight into and understanding of things.
"it offers quite a few facts to the perspicacious reporter"

Had to look it up. Thanks for the new word

This learned Scott, Dan Mc.Illroy was perhaps 20 years my senior and we met every week in the local pub, where tongues were loosened, never unpleasantly, but conversations were embroidered, shall we say.
1/ I had just started sailing and on that topic, he being a veteran of no fewer than five Fastnet races said: 'I've wrung more salt water out of my socks than you've seen in your entire life'.
2/ A mutual friend was due to travel up to Oban on business and Dan asked him to stop by the fishing port and get hold of a few of their famous kippers. This he did and I got what I thought was an absolutely splendid specimen, which I shared with my young OH. The following Friday we reconvened and Dan pronounced: 'Aye, a good kipper, Rupert, but not a GREAT kipper!'
