What is your favorite movie?

Post by Uncle Al »

Here's a behind the scenes look at one of my favorite movies :D
Making of "The Hunt for Red October" - Behind the Scenes
Great actors, action and quite suspenseful.
The clip is about 30 minutes but well worth watching :D

Have many 'other' favorite movies but this ranks in my top 5 :D

I think that my most favorite movie was the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
It was really funny as well as it kept your attention through out the whole movie.

Other fave movies not in order:
The Pink Submarine
The Harry Potter series
Saving Private Ryan
Down Periscope
Patton

I love sad ones like "Brief Encounter" or the final two minutes of "The Third Man".

I quite like Braveheart for some reason….

Actually, Pulp Fiction and Shawshank are right up there for me.

Impossible to choose one. It would change in ten minutes' time, never mind tomorrow.

Among my favourites are the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Fifth Element", "The Dark Crystal", "Star Wars " (the original one), and "The Wrong Trousers".

I've also recently seen and been impressed by "Dune" (2021) and the "Hunger Games" sequence.

As you can tell, I'm into SFF (science fiction and fantasy).

I would rate "Schindler's List" as one of the greatest films ever, but I wouldn't call it a favourite, as I'd rather never see it again.

In no particular order:

Casablanca -- great lines and excelllent plot
Sorcerer -- a killer soundtrack, great lines, great character development, and one of the best off-roading scenes ever
Dr. Strangelove -- black comedy at its finest
Blade Runner -- fantastic visuals, an astounding soundtrack, and one of the best ad-libbed sequences ever filmed
Blues Brothers -- the original, not the remakes -- outrageous lines, hilarious plot, and excellent music
Indiana Jones and the Final Crusade -- outrageous lines, the interplay between Ford and Connery, and a fantastic soundtrack [0]
Metropolis -- the original silent, good music, fantastic visuals, and a great plot
Time Bandits -- Monty Python at some of their most outrageous

[0] Anybody that can write a piece called "Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra" has my vote. Ditto, "Tourists on the Menu" from Jaws.

Top three:

1. Foul Play

2. Dr. Strangelove

3. Jurassic Park

I have a particular liking for science fiction. I also have a particular liking for comedy, but I find that well done comedies are few and far between-comedy is supposed to be the hardest genre to write.

I would call "Foul" on this one ;)
crfriend wrote:Metropolis -- the original silent, good music, fantastic visuals, and a great plot
Good Music :?: :?: :?: :?:
That would not be attributed to the 'film' but the artist(s) who played the music(piano, theater organ
or pit orchestra) to accompany the film. Many 'Silent Films' had a musical score[1] written for the film
but most of the films were not distributed with a score.
The musical theme was left up to the creative talents of the Musician who "Played"[2] the film.

[1] A musical score was included for LARGE theaters with a pit orchestra.
[2] I know this from experience. I've played silent films and enjoyed each one :D

I have immense admiration for those pianists/organists who accompanied silent films. It would require great stamina to stay playing practically without pause for 60-90 minutes, quite apart from having in the memory bank sufficient repertoire to be convincing and fit all scenes &c. Performing at speed off a musical score is the preserve of a very select few.

While I did do extended medleys from memory in my young days providing easy listening for evening diners, playing for films would have been on another level altogether.

A great thread.

Carl, I love the variety and depth of your choices. Mine are rather more prosaic.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’ve read the books 24 times.

Star Wars IV: A New Hope. As a 10 year old, it blew my mind.

The Shawshank Redemption. An inspiring film.

The Truman Show. Thought-provoking, and to me, the highlight ofJim Carrey’s career.

Dead Poets Society. It changed my life. Carpe Diem.

There are many other great films. Schindlers List is the most emotional film I have ever watched, bar none. A majestic film. The Sound of Music - my childhood, encapsulated. Where Eagles Dare - quotes abound with my best friend.

Aren’t films great?
