High Profile Kilt

Post by Myopic Bookworm »

Just had to mention that King Charles III wore a kilt today, both to meet the First Minister of Scotland and to attend the formal vigil for his mother at St Giles' Cathedral. The pattern is identified as the Prince Charles Edward Stewart tartan.

Just a wee historical note.
The Prince Charles Edward Stewart aka Bonnie Prince Charlie lived from December 1720 to January 1788.
The tartan in the picture was registered/designed in 1880 so he never saw it.
He was born in Italy and first came to Scotland aged 25. In total he spent a whole 14 months of his life on British soil.
This romantic picture was painted around the same time as the tartan was produced so there is even doubt that he ever wore a kilt too.

You're quite right, of course. The Tartan Register cites it from a pattern book of 1819. No doubt it was named to appeal to romantic Jacobites. I don't know whether the King wears it as a deliberate symbol that he, and not the Young Pretender, is entitled to be called Charles III.

.....and to get them to part with their hard-earned cash!
King Charles III is free to wear whatever tartan that Camilla will allow and same goes for all the lesser mortals to do likewise.
I doubt if there will be a surge in demand because our Charlie was wearing it though, not exactly "bonnie" enough to inspire romantic stirrings.
Did you know that there is a Koala Tartan? Antipodean colonial types, please note.

What's it got as a pattern? Embroidered drop-bears?

This is the sett and I am informed that the clan is affiliated to those other legendary highlanders, the MacSupials.
Perhaps Denimini might be able to enlighten us.

Now Carl, you should know that it has been proven by science that drop bears became extinct some years ago, there have been no proven sightings for many years, at least not in the state of Victoria.

Oh dear god that was bad. Funny, and got a howl out of me, but truly awful. The only way to make it worse would have been to invoke the small branch of the clan called the Arboreal MacSupials -- even higher than normal highlanders.

Or is that because there have been no survivors to relay the sightings?

How Ironic that the King should wear the tartan of someone who tried to take the throne. To be fair it had been given to someone with a very tenuous claim on it, but now Charlie boy rubs it in! I am not a Jacobite - the Bonnie Prince was trying to claim the throne for his father, the self-proclaimed James VIII of Scotland and would of course have inherited if he had succeeded. Like most Scots I know little of the 'Old Pretender' James VIII but his son was a waster who would have been a disaster for Scotland. In fact he was a disaster for Scotland - his rebellion was followed by decades of barbaric oppression in the Highlands and Islands that paved the way for the Clearances, where people were forcibly removed to make way for sheep. That is part of the reason there are Scots all over the world today. And we should not get hung up on these tartans - most if us are genetically only a faction of our surname in ancestry and the patterns are bogus anyway. Having a koala tartan puts it all in perspective. Does a kilt in koala tartan come with its own pouch instead of a sporran?

The answer that comes to mind is in the very worst possible taste yet also the ultimate in fashion coordination.
Some animal physiology does lend itself to sporran construction and the koala is so cute too.
