Does wearing a mask make it easier?

As one who believes in the science that says that if I contract Covid, I will most likely die, I feel moved to comment,
Sure, the mask is a choice but if your freedom should lead to me departing this world, I have but one dream.
I will have my freedom to become your worst nightmare and haunt your time remaining until you end up in the hells that you appear to richly deserve.

You fool, BobM - putting your personal issues before the welfare of others. Would your god do that? Hypocrite.

OK! Enough with the personal attacks
I don't like wearing one either it makes it harder for me to breath, BUT I do wear one.
Everyone here at the Cafe has a right to do what ever they want and wear what they want and if you do not agree then say so but personal attacks are not nice and do no good at all.

We have never before had to face the situation where one person's choice of 'clothing' could result in another persons death.  Perhaps face masks should not be regarded as clothing in the usual sense of the word.

Masks are not a clothing choice. The analogy is more like "assault with the intent to do harm". We don't throw poisons at others, or even our drinks, why is this different? Especially considering the vast number of asymptomatic carriers.

Wearing a face-mask is something done out of altruism. We all know that it's not something we do for "ME", but rather for those around us. Hopefully those around us are as courteous as we should be.

I was hesitant to take the mask advice up because of overly-cautious guidance given to a child in a health-care setting that could occasionally be hazardous, but have since revised my opinion. (The original advice was, "Cloth won't do anything. Get the Hell out of the room!")

Facts have since gotten in from outside (the US sources having been completely discredited by political BS) that whilst not perfect barriers, masks indeed help prevent the spread of the disease. We ignore that advice at not only our, but everybody in our presence, peril. What one does in one's own home is one's own business. What one does in public -- especially in times of public health emergencies -- is something entirely different.

In my region, many people were "anti-mask" and had the assumption they were for personal protection. They say they're not afraid to die. You tell them it's to protect others, they call you a socialist snowflake.

They still view them as primarily "personal protection". They believe this because a certain someone in a very high office told them so.

As for me, I've reached a point where I don't even really care anymore... I'm numb to the death toll. I don't argue with people about it anymore. I'm just so sick to death of western culture right now.

To put it in context, refusing to wear a mask in public is comparable to refusing to wear a condom when you may have AIDS or refusing to go into isolation if you are showing the symptoms of a notifiable contagious disease; it isn't a clothing choice or a sign of political allegiance.  It would be a lot more equitable if masks really were for the protection of the wearer, because only the people refusing to wear them would be infected instead of innocent bystanders.

I know pelmut, I know... but these people just. don't. care... :|

Imagine living in an area where 97% of people have opinions similar to BobM... then you'll know what life is like in Appalachia, and the southern states.

So I say... let them die if that's their pleasure. I give up. If I or someone in my family catches it, hopefully we survive, but I guess it is what it is.

But never let them judge you! NEVER LET THESE PEOPLE JUDGE YOU! They don't walk on water, and they sure as hell ain't no saints!

If masks work, and you wear one, why are you concerned about me? You might as well put up a chain link fence to keep mosquitoes out of your yard. They love to say "follow the science", but that is the last thing they want you to do because actual science declares that masks are functionally useless against viruses. A friend of mine is an RN
He tells me that the boxs N95 masks come in at his hospital say right on them that they are not for anti virus use. Further, unless you wear it correctly, and change it every 30 minutes or so you are at increased risk of bacterial pneumonia. If you want to signal your virtue by acting like a sheep, then by all means do as you please.

I'd like to ask you folks why you are so terrified of a virus that is about as dangerous to most people as seasonal flu? The common test used for it is not certified for diagnostics, and is specifically not for virus detection. The test returns as high as 90% false positives, and every "positive" test is counted as a "case". Moreover, to have a real pandemic the death rate has to be 12% or higher, not the 3/10 of 1% Covid death rate.

But don't trouble yourselves with facts when self righteous emotions are more pleasing.

My profile here doesn't mention that I have graduate degrees in physiology and organic chemistry because there is seldom a need on this forum as there ocassionally is for refuting erronious biblical views of clothing.

BobM, frankly in this discussion, I'm not bothered about you, I'm bothered about me and how I would fare in your close vicinity. The mask is supposed to reduce greatly, but probably does not stop, the spray of particles possibly containing virus particles from your mouth and nose. For you not to wear one is disrespectful to me and my perceived safety. That you don't care about that says a lot about your duty of care. That is what you are getting the flak about.

As to the virus, you should be concerned. It kills. Full stop. And hundreds die each day, thousands in the US. The evidence is not yet in as to what makes it lethal. Old and vulnerable people have caught it and recovered. Young apparently healthy people have died so we should have some fear of it. After all we may be next. I am concerned but not scared of it. I will die of something, if it's covid that has my name on it then fair enough, but unlikely. I have had several bouts of real flu that have had me bedridden for 2 to 4 weeks at a time and have battled through and am still here. I am blood type O and have other characteristics which herald a lower than normal incidence of catching coro. I also think that my wife and I had the virus last December which may or not make us immune. We haven't been tested so can't prove it one way or another but the symptoms were there and my wife NEVER gets viruses normally. For a time afterwards I lost my sense of smell.

Whatever, over here you wouldn't be allowed in a retail outlet or any other public building without a mask - you would be at least turned away and open to assault from someone who happened to take umbrage at your disrespect. I would be happier out in a skirt than go maskless. Don't be so selfish or inconsiderate and wear one irrespective of whether you think that they work or not. You are trying to defend the socially indefensible.

As for your qualifications, well, even the most learned can lack common sense and a sense of caring. And anyway over time what we learned has a tendency to vanish like the mist. Use it or lose it. I spent 20 years in IT in front line support and development, have a degree in Computer Science but left the industry 18 years ago so that qualification is now really worthless except to demonstrate as to what level of education I was capable of attaining. I wonder how much of what you learned then you really remember now? As for your friend being in healthcare well we have had doctors and nurses die of covid and we've had healthcare workers that have been deniers about the effectiveness of masks. So there are opinions on both sides and your citation is just another person's opinion. Personally I'd rather err on the side of safety and care for others. You obviously disagree. That's your prerogative, just don't come to Britain or near to me.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.
