Mathematics
Different people have different ideas about mathematics, so you don't always get the same answer:
What is 2 + 2 ?
Mathematician: 4
Engineer: 4.000 (+ or - 0.0005)
Car mechanic: 8.50 including tax
Journalist: A 200% increase !!!
Artist: I dream of a wonderful world where it would be 5 one day and 3 the next
Accountant: What would you like it to be?
Politician: Whatever I want it to be.

Re: Mathematics
Your math makes perfectly good sense to me.
13 X 7 =28
3X7 = 21
1X7= 7
7+21 = 28
Do I need to go on?
13 X 7 =28
3X7 = 21
1X7= 7
7+21 = 28
Do I need to go on?

Re: Mathematics
The United States should have joined the rest of the world and gone over to the metric system in the 1970s. We had the chance and blew it.

Re: Mathematics
Fractions are very useful for ordinary commerce; it is easy to work out a half or a third or a quarter of something that is measured in twelves. I am glad I was brought up 'dual-standard', with currency measured in 12s and 20s; it needs a lot less thought to do some calculations and quick checks. For temperature, Fahrenheit has no such advantage and I find Centigrade (or Celcius) much easier to relate to.
For scientific work, decimal has to be the only way. I was in the last year to study electrical engineering in Imperial units and most of our time was wasted learning the units and the conversions between them instead of understanding the principles and applying them in a straightforward manner. The older units have been of marginal use to me when studying historical engineering documents, but they must be a great hindrance to any practicing engineer lumbered with such an archaic system.
The engineer works to the nearest thou.
The carpenter works to the nearest eighth.
The shipwright works to the nearest ship.

Re: Mathematics
Common error. (-1/2)^2=(1/2)^2 does not mean -1/2 = 1/2.

"nope your math is perfect by the way do you have 2 10's for a 5"t
No, but I have two sevens and two three that I'd be willing to trade you.

Re: Mathematics
Even mathematicians don’t necessarily give the same answer. A number theorist or algebraist would tell you that 2 + 2 is means different things under different circumstances. But that doesn’t mean that truth is fungible.
Definitions matter, and deduction matters. R squared factors matter. Change point analysis matter. Recorded history matters. Radiological dating matters. There are some people that have opinions based off of nothing but personal preference, while there are others that have opinions based off of rigorous study, and responsible practices. It is folly to treat the two as equivalent.
