True. I hear your comments and those of Carl, Moon and others. The problem is the USA is so bipartisan that there is simply no space for a third-party. This has been going on for so long. I wish that it were not the case.

From what I have seen from posts on this website, there seems to be a paranoid fear of “socialism” which is irrational and based upon anti-Communist rhetoric which somehow transfers across to anything that is not right wing. I don’t know how you can resolve that. I would suggest looking at other countries where there are sensible parties from all sides of the political spectrum, but that seems impossible for the average American voter to actually understand or research.

I hope that the new government works out for you. I hope that the new government once again embraces the responsibilities of participating in a global concerted campaign to deal with climate change, sensible trading, and to avoid geopolitical posturing. All have been lacking in the last four years.

Well, just finished watching Biden's speech, I'll admit to being moved, and for the first time in almost half a decade, it was nice to finally hear a call for unification.

This is a matter of perspective. He doesn't have power to dictate changes and (IMHO) doesn't pretend to either. What he can do, and what he does, is put things on the agenda, and chaperone the slow and tedious negotiations between the parliament and the council, the two parts of the EU that actually matter. The parliament has a mandate based on their election, and the council represents the member states. Timmermans (and Samson's) personal opinion doesn't really matter in the end; they're just civil servants.
Gusto10 wrote: Fri Nov 06, 2020 10:21 pm That is the aattitude which brought us the Brexit. What will happen as soon as Merkel isn't there anymore and Macron replaced by Ms Le Pen?
People really need to learn to take the statements from the Commission for what they are: ideals that they have no power to enact. Exactly the same as Trump yelling for years that he wanted to get rid of the ACA, but in the end it wasn't up to him. (Not really a good comparison though, because Trump did actually have power to do things in lots of areas, the commission really doesn't).

The news understands this just fine. When the going gets tough, who do they interview? The PM because there lies the power. What the commission thinks is not important.

The EU is built on consensus and if the consensus isn't there then it seizes up and nothing happens. That would be bad.

Trump has said that he will sue the various states for whatever and demand recounts in, currently 5 states. Apparently the party requesting the recount has to pay for this with costs estimated at $3m per recount. So the recounts alone would cost at least $15m so could the Republican party actually afford such a waste just to satisfy the whims of one person? And that's without the costs of the court actions which certainly won't be cheap. I've read several scenarios about what could possibly happen over the next few weeks and some of them are disturbing. They range from very little as the administrations and heads of state gradually transfer their allegiance to Biden even before he is sworn in, to petulantly firing off all sorts of Presidential Orders and rearranging political assignments that may be difficult to undo. In the end he is President until the 20th January but in the meantime how many appointees will openly refuse to carry out Presidential Orders that are perhaps unwise or based on spite. Maybe it won't come to any of this and he will eventually accept the inevitable in that despite his attempted litigation to change results the world has moved on and accepted that Biden is the President-elect. Perhaps I am also being naive. It's not something I have to worry about and not a situation I have any influence in. Personally, I say to keep him playing golf for the next 75 days! 3 rounds per day should keep him occupied. Better still, ship him to Scotland as he can play on his course to his heart's content.

There's a lot in this that none of us understand because our infantile years are long behind us -- recall that this individual has all the emotional and intellectual maturity of a toddler. So his reactions could well be surprising, even terrifying given the overt power he wields.

In the end analysis, I suspect it's going to be somewhat akin to a three-year-old pitching a temper-tantrum in a supermarket after his mother says, "No." to him. Hopefully his handlers will be able to keep a check on the actual actions so he doesn't topple a stack of produce (or nukes). So long as the "birds" don't fly the planet will be OK for a little while longer (and I suspect the military has that problem solved).

There does exist the possibility of him being led out of the White House on 2021-01-21 in handcuffs by armed Secret Service personnel -- and that's not escaped the notice of more than a few folks around here.

72 days 22:48:04 remains... (No, I am not counting the milliseconds).

As far as sending him to Scotland goes, do you really think the Scots want him?

No we most emphatically do not, thank you very much.
However, I must disagree that what he could do will not affect me.
His potential actions over the next 72 days could have global implications.
That is certainly terrifying.

They are quite happy to accept his money. And they have apparently agreed to his building yet another golf course there. For me, they can keep him. I'm sure that those around him have a modicum of integrity and wouldn't carry out any overtly sinister or silly orders. From what I have read there are rules, written in other ages , that sort of cover this situation but they have been enacted rarely and of course the legal framework has changed so there is uncertainty as to how they now fit. Good luck for the next few weeks. Let's hope sanity prevails.

His supporters could set fire to the White House, try to pin the blame on a half-witted Jewish homosexual and claim it was proof of a Communist plot; there is an historic precedent for that.

The date's off by two full decades. Four if you really start looking carefully.

Well, looking at the last three months in detail, I knew all along when Trump attempted to savatoge the postal service, to slow the system down to a point where countless ballots would simply get lost and/or arrive too late to be counted, that this would happen... But that's what happens when a con man is running the show.

That's why I opted to vote in person. As blue states tend to draw Trumps wrath, I figured he'd try to pitch a load of Virginia ballots in the trash... though Virginia isn't a battleground state, still yet I figured he'd steal all he could get.

I'm still not 100% sure my vote counted, the voting machine broke down the moment we arrived, and they had us drop our ballots in a drop slot instead, the allowed they would feed the ballots into the machine later.

As Russell County is completely red, I do wonder of there was anyone who wasn't a Republican working the local polling place that day... I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of ballots for Biden were assigned to the trash heap.

Personally I think all mail in ballots should be sent to a centralized location within the state, I don't trust these small town hicks to do an honest job.

Edit: I stand corrected.... according to my voter information available on the department of elections website, it was received and counted.

....you know I checked...

I saw a joke that was quite funny.

Why is Trump no longer allowed at the Whitehouse?

Actually the statement makes quite a bit of sense once one backs off from all the hype. Both parties have, indeed, been failing the general public for decades now when it comes to policy perspectives. The blunt point is that the politicians of both of the major parties are in the pockets of the corporations and the billionaires and do not give a whit about the Public Welfare or the general population.

Blaming the top dog is rather pointless as he's but one cog in a well-oiled machine. We need to put the machine out of commission before we can properly fix the system.
