My Cornish World

Post by weeladdie18 »

I am intending to use this as a cross reference for those
who wish to remember their cornish Ancestors or Cornish
Heritage...Many went across the Atlantic to become
Cousin Jack after the demise of the Cornish Mining...
Some of those on the Scottish fishing came to Cornwall
and then headed west.
My Scottish Sea Captains sailed into Poole Harbour.
Granny had her Scottish maiden name and married a
a London Irishman ....her daughter married into a Welsh
family who moved to London...The London family moved
to a Dorset Quarrying Town...I moved from Bornemouth
to North Dorset , to the Somerset aircraft industry ...
To Plymouth, to London ..working in Fleet Street and Chelsea...
to Weymouth ...to Cornwall...

When I was working in Mayfair , I had a pleasant discussion
With the Duchess of Argyle.....
That is an interesting story....That would have been 1972

While I was working in Mayfair ,I popped into the
Royal Photographic Society and had a chat with Allan Watts.
Tom may have one of his publications.....
If I remember correctly Single Observer forcasting
Shows 28 photos of the clouds ....This an I spy book for anyone
who wishes to to study his clouds and establish how the
weather system will move for the day.
Check your cloud cover and then reference the information
as to your forecast for the day...
This is a visual aid for the forecaster .
The seamans rhymes will also apply.
At that time Allan had produced a pair of met wall charts
sponsored by B.P. 1972
Allan was an R.A.F. Met officer predicting the weather for the
flying operations...He then became a Science Teacher.
He wanted to write a book about school science
but his publisher asked him to persue Meteorological Knowledge
His grandson now takes the photos for his met publications.
You will have to bare with me as I am writing this thread
without refering to my reference books
Just google any information you wish to study further...Roderick

The next reference is to Admiral Beaufort and the Beaufort Scale
of wind speed indications.
The predicted wind speed is relevant to the sea state.
Look at the sea and the clouds and you can get a rough
idea what it will be like on the water or walking the cliffs.
I would be pleased if one of my friends would be kind
enough to down load the beaufort wind scale and sea state
Illustrations
Mike Green wrote The Art of Course Sailing...This was
based on the skills required to navigate a charter sailing
yacht on the Norfolk Broads..Wind speed was recorded
by the strength of the wind on the pub sign or the amount
of head blown off a pint of beer...All yachts passage planning
was carried out in view of a pint of beer and a pub sign

Tom
TOM I was replying to an answer phone message from my
boat insurers in Wales.. The statement made was
" why do you not have an email address or a mobile phone ? "
I nearly said "because I Have a replica of a 19 centuary lugger "
But my reply was The mobile phone does not work in the the valleys
and my email system is unreliable
Getting serious ,the insurance company is now able to offer
me 12 months lay up for a Trailer Sailer.
Discount price off "in commission based in my garden "....£ 30
We have come to an agreement....The policy requires Wheel Clamps
So they have agreed that I can take off the wheels and still be covered.
The next point I made was that is quite easy to slide a boat
with an inboard diesel off the trailer and push the boat
around the garden with a quad bike.
However We did agree that this policy was good value
as the policy price was quite low relative to the write off value.
Still I saved myself the cost of some rat traps to catch a rat
in my House ....Perhaps my mothers Irish logic saved the day.
No boating this year....I do not have time ....I am retired

Trying to be serious .the harbours and the beaches are closed
So no one is likely to get away before the Equinoxial Gales .
The next move is to go back on the fishing to pay the bills
as no on will buy the boat..
My boat should remain insurable
for another 20 years.....Clinker Mahogany on Oak...
a proper boat made in Devon
Google Beer Lugger ...she has no 12 on the mizzen sail ....Roderick

Tom
Tom this 1880s replica was based on a 1950 motor hire boat.
The lines of the hull were made finer to make the boat faster.
The third middle mast was removed , and replaced with
an iron topsail .
The next development was to point the spars higher to
make her point into the wind.
The St Ives Jumbo consider the Beer Lugger a serious challenge
at the Looe Lugger regatta...
The Jumbo at 20 feet over all has half a ton of lead in the bilges
and no Iron Topsail.
The Beer Lugger does not go about by dropping the main yard.
She bares away and gybes the main sail around the bowsprit.
This Beer Lugger is 16 feet hull length and 23 feet over all
with the Bow Sprit and Bumpkin .
I would sail her single handed
to prevent the crew capsising the boat...
ideal boat for your lake..........................Roderick

Perhaps my ten foot bermudian sloop would be more
suitable for you and the wife....the previous owner sailed this
little boat with his wife and two kids on board.
I rowed her three miles home when I ran out of wind
Those were the days ...Portland Harbour before the Olympics
I sat up in my bedroom and watch the fleet sailing inside
The Harbour....The air gets soggy with nostalgia.
That was before I was 70 years old..................
Go through all my thread and reference the photos on Google

Pelmut I felt really bad this morning ...I thought I may have
caught the bug...But no...I have been messing with rats,
dead shellfish and unused roof gutter drains.
I feel the symptoms are slightly different
Visability down to 200 yards in mist. So turn on the heating
and go back to bed...I Think this was just a back door trot.
The sort of thing the villagers get
when they do not wash their hands....

Thank you Carl for sorting out Mayfair....an interesting story
of suspected fraud in the retail photographic industry.
An Ethnic Minority Gentleman came into our Fleet Street branch
back in the early Sevenies and required a large quantity of
Photographic Chemicals and Printing Paper
He was informed that he could not pay by cheque as the bank
had closed and his cheque could not be authorised until the
following morning after 10 o 'clock .
He was most upset as he wished to do some photographic printing
that evening...A concession was made and he paid a third of
a weeks money by cheque for a smaller order....
He never returned and his cheque bounced.
The Police later infotmed us that he had been convicted of
10 charges of fraud......I was transfered to Mayfair.
We were on the lookout for fraud.......Roderick

I was at the counter in the m
Mayfair photographic shop.....An elderly lady wearing Scottish Tweed
came in and ended up with a big order for cine negative film
on the Counter ." How do you wish to pay madam ? " I asked.
Her response was
" You obviosly do not recognise me young man.
I am the Duchess of Argyle . Please put this order on my account "
