WHY DIDN'T WE HAVE A DRUG PROBLEM WHEN YOU AND I WERE GROWIN
THE OTHER DAY I WAS IN AN OLD FARMHOUSE IN THE ADJOINING
COUNTY AND SOMEONE ASKED ME A RHETORICAL QUESTION:
'WHY DIDN'T WE HAVE A DRUG PROBLEM WHEN YOU AND I WERE GROWING UP?'
I REPLIED THAT I HAD A DRUG PROBLEM WHEN I WAS YOUNG:
I WAS DRUG TO CHURCH FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL AND WEDDINGS AND FUNERALS.
I WAS DRUG TO FAMILY REUNIONS AND COMMUNITY SOCIALS NO MATTER THE
WEATHER.
I WAS DRUG BY MY EARS WHEN I WAS DISRESPECTFUL TO ADULTS. I WAS DRUG
TO THE DINNER TABLE WHERE WE COULD PRAY TOGETHER AND CATCH UP ON WHAT
WAS GOING ON IN OUR LIVES.
I WAS ALSO DRUG TO THE WOODSHED WHEN I DISOBEYED MY PARENTS, TOLD A
LIE, BROUGHT HOME A BAD REPORT CARD, DID NOT SPEAK WITH RESPECT, OR IF
I DIDN'T PUT FORTH MY BEST EFFORT IN EVERYTHING THAT WAS ASKED OF ME.
I WAS DRUG TO THE KITCHEN SINK TO HAVE MY MOUTH WASHED OUT WITH SOAP
IF I UTTERED A PROFANITY.
I WAS DRUG OUT TO PULL WEEDS IN THE GARDEN AND FLOWER BEDS, RAKE
LEAVES, MOW THE GRASS AND HELP MOM HANG CLOTHES ON THE CLOTHESLINE. I
EVEN HELPED DAD PAINT THE PORCH.
I WAS DRUG TO THE HOMES OF NEIGHBORS TO HELP MOW THE YARD, SHOVEL SNOW
OFF THEIR WALKWAY AND DRIVEWAY AND IF MY MOTHER HAD EVER KNOWN THAT I
TOOK A SINGLE DIME AS A TIP FOR THIS KINDNESS, MY DAD WOULD HAVE DRUG
ME BACK TO THE WOODSHED.
THOSE DRUGS ARE STILL IN MY VEINS AND THEY AFFECT MY BEHAVIOR IN
EVERYTHING I DO, SAY, OR THINK.
THEY ARE STRONGER THAN COCAINE, CRACK, OR HEROIN, AND IF TODAY'S
CHILDREN HAD THIS KIND OF DRUG PROBLEM, AMERICA WOULD BE A BETTER
PLACE.
GOD BLESS THE PARENTS WHO DRUGGED US!

Well another thing Doctors and Pharmacists did not dispense DRUGS like they were candy.
Only the minimal amount was given if any and one had to man up to the pain or sweat it out !
One was a great deal more careful in avoiding situations that would require painful results i.e.
amputation of a limb in the field without medical intervention - tales from wars about injuries
with no drugs available - a stick in the mouth and a shot of booze.
Now a days the least little scratch cut or bruise - bring out the full medicine cabinet - call the
EMT - get the your doctor to prescribe the full amount with unlimited refills - - -
Bunch of pansies and then why did he get hooked on that opium and not cut off timely ?
Oh it hurts owee and mommy kissing it making it well was not as good as those drugs.
Then the public with no moral fiber to resist and control the drug abuse - disgusting !
And we are not talking only about prescription medicine here - OTC (over the counter)
can be just as addictive (candy coated medicine) as the prescribed stuff.
My dad was a pharmacist (1945-1970) and I know all too well of the problems here.

"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

Tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, and opium/heroin have been drugs that killed many for a long time.

Indeed, let's not forget the patent medicine era. Opium has been a problem for ages...Jim wrote:Tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, and opium/heroin have been drugs that killed many for a long time.
America has a drug problem because after all this time, we finally admitted we have a drug problem.

Indeed wars were fought over it -- up until rather recently, I'll add.moonshadow wrote:Opium has been a problem for ages...
On the overall prevalence of drugs use, I suspect that a lot of that is driven by the ratty economy in the USA and a startling lack of hope for entire swathes of the population. On the "Opioid Crisis", I wonder how much of that is simple suicide because of a complete lack of hope for the future. (Of course NOBODY here talks about suicide.)

Re: WHY DIDN'T WE HAVE A DRUG PROBLEM WHEN YOU AND I WERE GR
Opiates were, in those days, derived mainly from natural plant based sources and represented significantly higher costs relative to average income. Those addictive drugs were largely heroin and cocaine. Today we have a flood of drugs like fentanyl and other synthetic opiates that are powerful, cheap, and deadly. Sad that it takes a wave of addiction and overdose fatalities to get our attention. No, this problem didn’t emerge overnight. Men are becoming better at manipulating addiction of all sorts (note the vaping industry) to enrich themselves at the expense of human misery.
As a matter of fact, the sun DOES shine out of my ...

I first heard a record of Tom Lehrer songs in 1959 and one of the numbers on that was 'The old Dope Peddler'......I'll quote:
When the shades of night are falling, comes a fellow everyone knows.
It's the old dope peddler, spreading joy wherever he goes........
He gives the kids free samples, because he knows full well,
That today's young innocent faces, are tomorrows clientele,
Here's a cure for all your troubles, here's an end to all distress,
It's the old dope peddler, with his powdered happiness.
At age 17, having had zero experience of such things I didn't fully understand the prophetic nature of the song, one of many topical subjects Tom Lehrer touched on. He was a very perceptive individual, musician, performer, Maths Professor.
He is still with us, by the way.
Tom

Don’t forget Dylan’s Mr Tambourine Man. Most of my friends smoked dope. Some used harder stuff (although they were generally regarded as idiots). Smoking tobacco was widespread. All of us used, and still use, alcohol in a certain establishment certain members of the police drug squad could be found using cannabis. We did have a drug problem. Some people have just blanked it out
