Feeling Pretty

Discussion of fashion elements and looks that are traditionally considered somewhat "femme" but are presented in a masculine context. This is NOT about transvestism or crossdressing.

If Muhammad Ali was okay with calling himself “pretty” then I think we are past denying the term to men. As to how you’re received in pursuit of your own concept of what makes one pretty depends upon your desires and the boldness of your exhibition. I’d speculate that most of us are considerably beyond the age of realistically achieving a feminine form of “pretty”- I don’t think there is a Boy George among us - so we are left with self-satisfaction as the gauge of our own prettiness.

The way I set my man in a skirt style I am happy with the comments from the female " I like your outfit " ....." you look smart " ....or.." You look nice "
I feel I am successful on getting a male take as a Man in a Skirt .

It's generally considered the domain of girls, but a lot of us freestylers must feel it too.

I never really understood it before. "Pretty" seemed to be something one would want to be in the eyes of others, and seemed to require a coherence, at least, with one's physical makeup. Men can be called "beautiful" but rarely are they called "pretty". Women can be called pretty just because of their faces, regardless of what they are wearing.

I now know that feeling pretty is something I am capable of, regardless of whether I would be judged so by the eyes of another. I get in the elevator and catch my legs and feet in the mirror and "ooh pretty" is what pops in my mind, if I'm wearing heels. If the rest of my outfit is pretty, even more so.

Now that I am conscious of the ways I can feel pretty, I find myself wanting the feeling more. I would want it even if no other eyes would see it, but I know others have eyes too, and hope the cognitive dissonance of a man wearing something pretty doesn't spoil it for them.
This is a very complex and confusing issue .. It covers a very large spectrum . I am posting a picture that I think relates to this subject

I am anxious to get comments from the café

Oldsalt, that is a pretty dress contributing to a bright and cheerful look. No gender references needed for a description.

I have not been called pretty since I was 10 years old (I had very blond hair and long eyelashes then) and have not thought of myself as such since, even when wearing a pretty skirt. I don't think there is anything wrong with describing a male as pretty.

I do full crossdressing as well as wearing skirts as a man. I don't identify as a woman when I am in full fig and I aspire to elegance rather than being pretty. The husband of a female friend described me to her (out of my hearing) as pretty which I think was a compliment - I think he had been expecting a disaster. I don't even think of my clothes as pretty - it is just not a word I use.

It indeed relates to the topic. It's indeed not masculine. I do think that the answer is given by the question.

Pretty outfit. It must be a joy to look down and see your feet in those shoes. I'm not sure the outfit suits you though. I am also having cognitive dissonance because everything seems so feminine but your head.

Speaking at random without considering previous posts.... May I suggest that a female may look pretty to an observer ....
but a human being would probably use a different word to accurately describe their feelings .

Moving the goal posts ....A male may see a skirt which he considers " looks sexy "..... But what does this mean ?

Each Man in a Skirt can draw his own conclusions as to why he " enjoys " wearing a skirt .

I may say to a Female " I like your Skirt " or " You look nice" .....A Female may say the same thing to me....
I take the statement as a compliment on my attire . The unanswered question is what perception does the female have
when she has a feeling of enjoyment from seeing your attire.

This whole subject is a can of worms .....I just treat it as bit of playful banter .

It is unfortunate that the younger generation have a serious misuse of the English Language . An example is the use
of the word ....." Cool ".... it may be suggested that a Man in a Skirt looks Cool .....what exactly does that mean ?

"Sexy" isn't what I'm after, and I've never been accused of such. I'm not trying to be a bombshell hottie, which would be a futile endeavor at any rate.

But pretty? Yes... always.

Incidentally I'm also not bashful about calling something else pretty, or holding a dress or skirt against me in the clothing store and fawning over it like ladies tend to do.
Hey Moon ,I like the idea of being a ..." Bombshell Hottie "....dressed to kill.... I would probably wear camouflage colours and hide in the woods . L.O.L.

Let's not confuse "pretty" and "sexy"; they can overlap, but usually only tangentially. For instance, it is perfectly possible to derive visual pleasure from the aesthetics of something and not get aroused by it. That's the primary difference.

Personal tastes also strongly influence what one finds pretty, attractive, or sexy -- and this is likely different for just about everybody.
The unanswered question is what perception does the female have when she has a feeling of enjoyment from seeing your attire.
That is something that is likely unknowable. For one, women are quite cagy about talking about what pushes their buttons and secondly, try actually explaining verbally what pushes yours. It's not as easy as it sounds -- like the famous quote from a Supreme Court Justice (referring, in this case, to pornography), "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it".

A right oxymoron for the likes of me, for sure. I find certain young girls pretty. End of story.

Usually sexy and skirts makes me think of women in their finery, as rarely are there men (aside from Mark, Eightofnine and SkirtsDad) who could stray into that category with their combination of skirts plus their accessories

Men in kilts look hot to most women (due to well worn cliche of being commando under the kilt), but I doubt the majority of men would have that effect on women wearing a fitted dress or skirt, or a casual denim pencil whilst rocking a pair of sneakers... I've had many a compliment in a traditional kilt (feeling anything but pretty  ) , but most who see the corporate wear of skirt, tights, heels and a shirt have rarely commented.

I think most "unsee" rather than tolerate, but when they see normal guy stuff aside from the wardrobe, sometimes conversations as to why start up. We are a few years away from being "cool", due to outlandish stuff on the catwalks, but it's great seeing skirts there.

Desireable is a word I would throw into the mix, if I find an outfit I really like...

How about flowers?

I mean, they both make me want to look more closely, touch, and, um, you know, sniff...
