Skirts and Ballet Flats for men on the Runway

Discussion of fashion elements and looks that are traditionally considered somewhat "femme" but are presented in a masculine context. This is NOT about transvestism or crossdressing.

Skirts and Ballet Flats for men on the Runway

Post by brennk »

Happy to see skirts/dresses and ballet flats for men on the runways. I keep hoping it will help mainstream the look, even just a little bit.

The only one of those outfits I would be caught in would be the last one but without the lettering. That one is at least normal looking.

Oh yeah, I would be smiling too!!

The second one looks like it is a dress, and without the preposterous 6-sizes-too-big jacket it would look fine. But as presented, the third outfit is the runaway winner.

The fashion industry is about being completely over the top during the fashion shows. The stuff they put in stores is a little more normal. Not a skirt, but less radical...

The flats look better than the clothing but with modifications I would think all could be ok. Runway stuff rarely ends in retail without some toning-down.

Yes, just as well I started wearing skirts before I saw those :)

At least the one in black has an acceptable neutral gender look, although a bit pouty.
The others are too far out and funky for my taste.

Prove it. It might be what Mick Jagger looked like when he was in his teens (back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth - or so some would have us believe).

Number 2 dress might work without the silly coat; can't see it well.

I agree with Moon.

Number one is hard to call as well.

I would agree with moon that #3 is a girl I don't think #1 is isn't there something about a pronounced adams apple is a male trait

If you look at the 2019 and past shows for this particular designer, the gender of the model is irrelevant.

This is a sidebar to my rants about "There's no such thing as a 100% certain definition of male or female". Every single trait commonly associated with one sex or the other, including the Y chromosome, can be found to some extent in either sex. It's less of a solid state switch (dare I say... binary?) so much as a bell curve.

The vast majority of biological males will have a Y chromosome, prominent adam's apple, a penis, greater height, facial hair, bigger muscles, more inclination towards anger and violence, a deeper voice, square jaw, etc. The vast majority of women will have larger breasts, no facial hair, tend to be shorter with smaller muscles, more of a nurturing than aggressive side, no Y chromosome, no penis.

And yet... there are people with a combination of those traits. Women with facial hair or even a penis; men with larger breasts and a rounder face. Admittedly women with a Y chromosome and men lacking Y chromosome and/or a penis are extremely rare, but they do exist. So you can never say that someone is definitively, categorically male or female. You can only say that it's extremely likely that someone with most of the traits associated with one sex or another is likely to be that sex.

And with that, we've completely derailed a thread that was about fashion

I thought the same. The other outfit look like someone borrowed over sized clothing from a friend.
