Good Evening .....

Post by GeoD »

From the English Lake District and thank you for letting me join your group though I must admit Ive been a "watcher" for many years, I love wearing skirts etc though never ventured out so far and as I'm now almost 70 I would value your help in what you think would be a good skirt for the first time out, I have a number of skirts but are rather "mini" so probably not suitable so what length do you think - knee ?, I will most likely wear tights or leggings but open to all ideas and suggestion's.
One again thank you for letting me join with you.

Hi, Geod, and welcome to the group.

As to a good skirt for going out, the usual consensus is that knee-length denim draws the least attention.

But more importantly, wear whatever you can be most confident in. You'll undoubtedly find that when people notice your skirt (and no matter what, some will) after a second or two there're going to look you in the face. And that's when you need to look confident, unconcerned, and friendly. If you present that attitude, that's how they'll see you. And if not, then not.

So how do you build up that confidence? I'm afraid it's sink-or-swim. Just do it.
Courage, conviction, nerve, verve, dash, panache, guts, nuts, balls, gall, élan, stones, whatever. Get some and get skirted.

Welcome GeoD and if you've been a lurker for some years you will have seen a common thread running through the various posts and that is that for a first time choose a night time excursion to a store or petrol station or just a walk out. Knee length denim or black skirt with a man's shirt/jumper on top. Don't look for reactions but then don't ignore any approaches either. Just act as if it is all normal even though you may be like jelly inside. It will pass, we've all been through it. It may seem like a big deal and it is at first then not so much so. Wear what is comfortable to you and develop a sense of style that fits your character. I'm 63 and wear short skirts and so do some others in my age bracket. If you don't do it now you never will. Those who notice don't care as they have their own problems. :D
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

GeoD morning and welcome!

Another vote for knee length, plain, and blue/black/grey. Denim or something a bit lighter if it's a hot day. Basically as much like a pair of men's shorts as a skirt can be. This should minimise the feeling of sticking out. Take your courage in both hands and step outside!

You'll draw less attention to yourself bare legged than in tights.

It's not easy at first but with a bit of practice you'll think nothing of it.
Keep on skirting,

Well, I'm from the Lakes as well and have never had a problem. Just be yourself, go about your daily life as though nothing has happened.
When speedboats set off they need to get "over the hump" to get over initial resistance then things go smoothly. The only "hump" we have is our own nerves, so wear the denim as it is unobtrusive, but just do it.

Sinned has the right idea a late lit visit to a gas station especially one where you pay at the petrol pump this way you can almost hide behind your car door. The knee length denim is the best choice. I have had a denim skirt on and a fellow said isn't nice that it is finally warm enough to wear shorts. You have to just do it .its ok to take a dry run in shorts just to get the feel of the place.

Welcome to skirtcafe. I have periods of absence from this forum and only just noted your introduction. Pleased to note you have taken your skirt wearing further and by joining here.

I and my wife are not too far from yourself, in the YDNP. Have quite a few visits to the Lakes as a keen fell walker and participant of a Lakes walking club. We will even drive over to two of our favourite Lakes pubs for an evening meal. Club walking in trousers, some fell walking in skirts but socialise always in skirts as in omany other aspects of life.

With regards advice on length of skirt, all I can say, the secret to success is simply be you and wear what is comfortable for you. For me I wear calf length skirts. If the length goes less than 35 inches I start to feel uncomfortable, but then there are male skirt wearers who could not bear the lengths I prefer. As too the style and material. As humans we are all different and what one prefers, another would not.

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. The secret to success is confidence. If you feel right, you will be confident in yourself and you will portray that to others. If you show you are comfortable with yourself negativity from others is significantly reduced if not elliminated.

I'm 53. Skirted in public since early 2011. Worn my preferred attire for 12 years prior to that privately and yes throughout my life felt society with its expectations of me as a man had suppressed me. I enjoy life now. Far more vibrant and positive than pre 2010 and do not let society dictate what it thinks I should wear. My wife is very supportive.

Good luck. No doubt will see your posts from time to time.

Welcome GeoD , and just go out wearing what you like most.
My wife supports me 100% wearing skirts all day. I go out and about wearing skirts a couple of weeks now, and i know now that I should have taken that discission years before last years December.

Starting out wearing skirts at the beginning of winter, isn't easy when you never had leggings or panty's on. At first it feels strange, but it will suprise you how comfy they really are. When I'm not wearing a skirt, when I'm working it feels strange those naked legs in trousers. I can't wait untill spring returns. Then I will wear an utilitykilt when I'm at work on my crane. ( I lift things at construction sites )

In this couple of weeks i showed my skirts to all my family and friends. Even to the dentist  Some people asked me why, and I answered: "Women can put on anything and get away with it. Now it is our turn." I like high heels but my ankles say NO, no high heels for me.
Even cowboy boots are a no go.
Be proud to wear a skirt or dress, they are just clothes. Yes , they are for men too
