Mass Volountary Galley-slavery
I have just returned from a week spent in Bled in Slovenia, a chocolate-box-pretty place with a small lake just over 2000 meters in length.
This year once again the FISA held the World Masters' Regatta there. This has become by far the largest rowing regatta on Earth with some 6000 entrants.
After a fine start to the week the weather turned partly miserable and my submitted pics show this. Almost half the competitors are female and in that 36-90+ age range present the finest collection of fit bodies to be seen anywhere. The same goes for the men, of course.
Not a skirt in sight amomg the rowers who without exception wear unisex lycra one-pieces.
Masters finance themselves and travel to & accommodation in these developed locations is not cheap. Neither is the transport of boats, oars and equipment to the event or hiring them on site.
The actual racing experience is where the galley-slavery comes in. Like banging your head off a wall it's lovely when you stop ! The real fun for most is the meeting up with old rivals and the eternal rowing-oriented banter.
They've scheduled the 2018 event to take place in September in W. Florida.........Brave, but I'm not sure I'd want to risk that one.

Tom, those photographs are absolutely exquisitely beautiful! Thanks for sharing them with us.
I hope you and your colleagues acquitted yourselves well in the competition.

As much as I enjoy exercise, the choice of the blue umbrella'd float appeals, together with a glass of red and a small selection of cheeses. Lovely photos.

I had to wait for SportGraphics to send me this, just arrived this morning.
It depicts my personal transport underway along the Bled lake course, showing the ageing single cylinder internal combustion powerplant visible above the gunwales. It is a bit down on compression nowadays and doesn't rev very freely when throttle is applied anymore, hence no gold gong.
Like the headmaster's term report....'Could do better'

Tom, that's a steep hill you're rowing up
Fine photos and I hope you enjoyed it even if you didn't win anything. If you had you'd have mentioned it.

Denis,
Since getting Windows 10 the thing does this often with pics. Carl F. explained it to me, but i still don't get it. Click on it and the enlarged view is horizontal

Just leg-pulling Tom. TBH I'd just come back from Egypt, was really, really tired with little sleep on the overnight then having to get a train back from Manchester Airport. Hungry as well but when we went out to a local fish and chip restaurant I really struggled to eat as I was so tired. Yesterday seems just like a bit of a waking dream. Feel better now after some sleep. I guess as I get older I struggle to adapt to the travel even though Egypt is only a 4.5 hour flight and BST+1 at that time.
We have two laptops and they're getting to the stage where we really need to replace them as they struggle at times with ebay and other sites but the thought of getting Win10 keeps me on the present path. It's good news that MS have said that it'll be their last invocation of their deadly spell.

The question then becomes, "What will they replace it with?" The mind quivers in fear, because whatever it is will be worse than what's out there today.Sinned wrote:We have two laptops and they're getting to the stage where we really need to replace them as they struggle at times with ebay and other sites but the thought of getting Win10 keeps me on the present path. From what they've said it will only be upgrades. But then they COULD always change their minds. Maybe they've just reached the bottom of the pile and just need to tweak it from now on to keep it there.

I think the question really is: What update of Windows 10 do you prefer...as if you have a choice?crfriend wrote:The question then becomes, "What will they replace it with?" With Server 2016/Windows 10 if we do see a new "version" it will be just an update of the last update.
Back in the day...I had no problems with Vista. And I have administered Server 2008 (Vista's server incarnation) since 2009, just last month replacing it with Server 2016 (Windows 10). Machine-wise, don't go for the low end unless you just need to browse the web and do email. Else get 8-12 gig of ram, 500+ gig hard drive and a current i7 processor. Win 10 is far more secure than its predecessor, and older version may not be getting quite the attention Win10 is so the patching schedule for older version might be slipping. Unsupported version? I'd say use them as paper weights Otherwise rip out the networking and use them only in an 'air-gapped' environment. That is all.

Re: Mass Volountary Galley-slavery
It's more of a question of what shell I wan to use (the "User Interface" in GUI parlance)? Do I want a "the whole world's a 'phone" interface or do I want a simple, fairly minimal, interface in which I can actually get the sort of creative work that I do done in?Darryl wrote:I think the question really is: What update of Windows 10 do you prefer...as if you have a choice?
The TWIT ("Telephone's Where It's aT") interface is great if you're surfing Farcebook and absorbing "content" (most of which is advertising); what I need is something where focus-follows-pointer, doesn't require me to touch the screen (humans are astonishingly filthy animals), and has a proper keyboard. Perhaps I pine too much for the days of X11 when one could choose a window-manager that one liked instead of sucking on the teat of some Corporate mammoth.
Which will already be well past its "best used by" date when it escapes. (I do not believe that Microsoft has actually had a proper release in decades.) And when it does, it'll be the TWIT interface. With Server 2016/Windows 10 if we do see a new "version" it will be just an update of the last update.
Do you have any idea how precisely hilarious those numbers sound? That's more computer power than was on the entire planet within some of our life-spans. To do what? Surf porn and absorb advertising? We flew to the moon and returned safely to the Earth with machines which measured memory in "k" not "G" or even "M" -- and some didn't even have disk drives.[... I'll candidly admit that Microsoft have a gem in Mica; however, with the way they manage it, good old-fashioned VMS is at least, if not more, secure.

GNU/Linux and other Unix operating systems still use X11, and provide you with a wide variety of desktop environments and window managers to choose from. My personal favorite is Xfce.crfriend wrote:Perhaps I pine too much for the days of X11 when one could choose a window-manager that one liked instead of sucking on the teat of some Corporate mammoth.

Re: Mass Volountary Galley-slavery
Well...I find the usual Windows 10 Desktop just as good as the Windows 95/98/XP/2000/Vista/7/8 Desktops. I don't use the "Live Tile" "Modern" interface at all. Running Office 365, PowerShell Studio, Visual Studio 2017, Sport Tracks, PreSonus Studio One for audio work (as well as Cubase and Wavelab) and Sony Vegas Movie Studio for video. Especially with the audio and video the more RAM and the more disk the better. Plus my home was hard-wired for 10 Mbps Ethernet, 100, Gigabit, and now 10 Gigabit so I can throw some really huge files from machine to machine. I also have been doing more and more work with virtual machines (also needing lots of RAM/disk) so I can have a test network, run Kali or OpenBSD or even MacOS 10.13 High Sierra as I am toying with the idea of breaking down and adding an Apple to the herd.crfriend wrote:It's more of a question of what shell I wan to use (the "User Interface" in GUI parlance)? I used to recommend less for home users, now I just recommend pretty much what I listed above because sooner or later someone wanted to edit audio files or this or that or make/edit videos. RAM is cheap. Disks are cheap. Upgrading, less so.
I also find Win10 to be the most secure OS, but I stillhave a multi-layer security posture based on the Critical Controls...less so for some business clients and much less so for home users - which may change due to the growing threat environment.

Dennis,
I'm afraid technical jargon about computers leaves me firmly out in the Cold. At least Egypt must have been warm, to say the least. Glad for you that you got away and missed Ophelia &c. A real dose of blue skies & Sun is always therapeutic.
