Once more into the breach...

Post by crfriend »

... or is that "breech"?

The fine lads at phpBB have rolled a new version of the software that drives the forum and it's time to install it to pick up a few security-related patches. I'm tentatively aiming for sometime late this Saturday (2015-06-13) afternoon (EDT; evening UTC) if I still have a place to live and a 'Net connection. The changes look minor. No outage is expected.

I'll post a time once I have one.

"Cry Havoc, and set loose the dogs of war!" I'm pretty simple minded when it comes to getting along with computer tech so here's my best wishes as you do battle! I love the scene from Henry V!

Thanks for the care you put into maintaining this forum. I think I've spent more time reading your announcements than bothered by issues with the forum. Well done.

The prototyping was done in my lab a few minutes ago and I have no hesitation to put the new version into production.

I'm still looking at late Saturday afternoon (EDT). A precise time to be announced once I learn what's to become of my existence and living arrangements.

It'll be sometime early this evening (EDT)/late evening (UTC). The files are staged, the script is written to implement the change, and once I pull the trigger the whole thing will happen in under 2 seconds.

I'll send a warning a few minutes ahead of time.

'Tis a "done deal". It took longer than expected, mainly down to a cache-purge that needed to happen and didn't work as expected.

In any event, bark at your humble Barista if things seem wonky.

Well I must comment - I went out into that internet thing and felt rather strange.
Stepped thru that portal thing and had this tingling feeling as I first touched that
mouse device - damn needed to replace the rechargeable batteries in the device !
Then because I wasn't in full Windows mode that acted up also fading to black !
The screen saver kicked in and I could see the reflection of myself in the glossy
black touch-not applique - 'Windows windows where for art thou ?'
Oh come on get real - may the force be with you cause it certainly is not with me !
Alas when I hit the escape key and I wasn't escaping to anywhere - THEN it occurred
to me that All Mighty Wizard of OZ had did his thing and waved his mysterious wand
over the architecture of the machine upgrade and popped me up out of the rabbit hole !

So where ever you go there you are !

So nothing went wrong ye say ?

WOW what a hallucinating F5 (refreshing) experience !
Absolutely nothing changed but it felt like it did !
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

So far I've seen exactly what security patches should produce: no discernable change. Thanks for your attention to maintenance of this forum.
