Re: When do you say it's *hot*?
How hot you feel has as much to do with the sunlight as it does the air temp. Here in Arizona it does get really hot, earlier than most places, but you can stand the temperature as long as you're not out under the sun. Even if it's not really that hot we have a lot of direct sunlight, and that makes it feel hotter than it would otherwise, much like the humidity does to the air.
Sorry, I don't know the C numbers that well, I'd have to call up some app to calculate it, but as Coultron said earlier, when you're at 100F + it's hot. We hit that a couple of weeks ago and we will keep on hitting it until just before the end of October. Mostly it's a dry heat until the monsoons start coming from Mexico. That and the haboobs. Phoenix is the city of big haboobs.

Ditto. Perhaps I am a simpleton, but I would have called it a "dust storm." Since they call Chicago the "City of Big Shoulders", I was hoping Phoenix, like me, was merely objectifying the female anatomy. "City of Big Haboobs" did seem a more fitting slogan for Las Vegas, or maybe Los Angeles, though. As a weather term, "haboob" is a new one to me.

"Haboob" might be Spanish. But that's only a guess on my part. I'm an inveterate monoglot (to my eternal shame).

Seems it is an Arabic term used for Saharan dust storms as well.

When I worked in Libya (1984-85), we had a few dust storms - locally they were called ghiblis which came from the Sahara and lasted up to 4 days.dillon wrote:Seems it is an Arabic term used for Saharan dust storms as well.
Once, when working in the office in central Misurata, the very air outside looked like it turned orange for about an hour! (I didn't have a camera with me but it is similar to this one below) Not very pleasant to go outside in.

That reminds me of the "red fog" of Houston, TX. Driving through at night, your headlight beams were red in color as they penetrated and illuminated the fog/smog that filled the air. It was a product of oil refinery and chemical plant pollution. I understand they have cleaned up a lot of that now. I couldn't imagine living in that environment.

We very occasionally find air-borne Saharan dust deposited on our cars here. It happens only once every few years. We never get anything remotely approaching pollution-driven smog and with our winds blowing across the island off the Atlantic, at least we're all able to get a breath of fresh air!

I come from the wet and windy Cornish coast so anything above 15cel is hot for me!

Stunning post, Trtnsmth. B&B is used to that sort of thing, of course. They get it for four long Summer months every year on Clydeside. The Strathclyde Police have a devil of a job keeping their traffic cones from flowing down the gutters ! The heat even melts the ice cream as well.

P.S. A thousand years ago at a medical station in Kenya, served by aircraft I once got a pic. of no fewer than nine lions congregated under the shade of a light aircraft's high wing. I seem to have mislaid the pic. alas.
