Double standards

It seems that not only do double standards exist in everyday life they do in music as well.

I've been listening to Celtic Woman and Celtic Thunder recently and have been drawn to a short passage in Caledonia that's ruffled my fur somewhat.

Specifically I am referring to one passage where Celtic Woman renders, "I've kissed the fellas and left them crying" and where Celtic Thunder renders it, "I've kissed the girls and left them crying".

Why is it that we accept the former as normative and the latter (at least to my mind) deeply dishounourable? This may be a reflection of my inner mind's working but it rankles me because it does seem to expose a double-standard and I don't like those much. What gives?

Maybe I'm just less sensitive to these things than you are Carl, but I really can't feel very differently about the two forms. From my perspective they are simply a reflection of the gender of the performer and I read nothing more than that into them.

Oh, I'm sure that's in fact the case, but I'm a bit of an old school type and take things like fidelity seriously.

Oh, that's a can of worms. Whenever my friends in church go on a rant about homosexuality, I point out that Jesus had far more to say about marital fidelity and divorce than he ever said about gays. Yet it's *ok* to accept men who repeatedly ditch their wives for a younger model (I'm talkin' to YOU, Newt Gingrich and Ronald Reagan), even have divorced/remarried clergy. Where is the outrage? Don't get me started.
