Nothing unusual about a man in a skirt?

Post by couyalair »

We often read here comments such as "No-one seemed to notice what I was wearing."

Yes, that's undoubtedly quite true; people you meet in the street or in shops and offices do indeed go about their business as if they'd not noticed our skirts (or green hair, or tatous, or ...).
Put those people safely inside a tram or a bus and watch them as they sail past you, you may notice a difference.
On the way out on errands this morning, and on the way back, I walked beside a tramline. People on the pavement seeing me looked the other way; people I dealt with (shop assistants, hospital receptionists, radiologist) just did whatever their job entailed. But EVERY face on my side of the trams that passed me turned and stared from behind their bulletproof windows, and stared and stared, fingers pointing, or open-mouthed.

Draw your own conclusions.

Martin,
It's probably the pink tutu, go for earth tones and it may work better! ;)

Martin,

People on public transport are invariably bored and seeking visual stimuli. They would do the same if you wore a bright yellow coat, or if you were carrying a rabbit. That doesn't mean they disapprove, or are laughing at you - they are just visually "surfing" and anything remotely unusual will be a point of interest. We all do that, consciously or otherwise.

My point was that we are deluding ourselves if we think that the people who make no comments or raise no eyebrows have not noticed our skirts; rather, they are too polite (or too worried about losing their job) to make any comment that could appear impolite.

OK, John; I'll replace my tutu with something more sober next time.

Five possibilities when you get no visible reaction to your skirt:
1 The person has not noticed.
2 The person has noticed but thinks it unremarkable, or at least not interesting enough to warrant any response.
3 The person is dealing with you in his or her work and can't react.
4 The person has noticed but is too polite, embarrassed or reserved to react.
5 The person has noticed and is utterly gobsmacked.

No 1 is quite possible for some styles of skirt and for people who appear to have their minds on other things. But I reckon that no 4 is by far the most common, particularly here in Britain where being reserved is a national trait. The studied silence from some people is beginning to get to me!
Keep on skirting,

I have worm a couple of skirts yesterday and today. Yesterday and last night I had on my 15" denim mini-skirt and got petrol - girl behind desk kept looking out the window in my direction whilst I was filling up and I got a nice smile when I paid. Later, I went out for a meal and a pint (actually 2!) and a meal at a local restaurant in Dyce (local to where I was staying that night). I did see several people look and take a second look but the reaction was either 2 or 4 above.

I find that when I am trying to hide and not be seen, or hope that I am not then my confidence levels drop, whereas, if I want confidence then I need to completely change my attitude. My attitude now when wearing a kilt or skirts is that - I want people to see me, I want them to see that I am not going to conform to them, I don’t care about their insecurities, their prejudices or what they think; instead, I want people to see that men do have a more comfortable masculine option than pants and shorts and if women are no longer restricted then why the hell should us men.

I find that changing my attitude to being slightly rebellious to the whole social establishment helps me with confidence. If I try to hide, I lose the confidence and become very self conscious.

When I am confident, people see that and they seem more intimidated by my confidence and their own lack of confidence. I believe this makes the whole skirt look masculine, especially with a kilt. When you are confident people seem to not just accept what you are wearing but are more inclined to like it.

I get no more comments about my skirts as I used to get from my trousers. Actually, in both cases I always got more comments about my weight than my clothing. Usually something really stupid like ... Sir, Oh Sir, did you ever consider going on a diet?? I usually answer that one with ... What a good idea, Thank you VERY much. I never ever would have thought of that without your suggestion. Don't you think it amazing Sir, that I made it all the way to 70 without ever hearing that previously? my goodness, what a wonderful idea...YESSIR!! :faint: :faint:
