Yes, but what happened afterwards was gruesome in the extreme. When on their way in the small whaleboats to S. America they ran out of food and had to draw lots to sacrifice themselves to be eaten by the others, so they might survive.
They had feared they would be canibalised by the natives of the islands to the West of them, so they headed East, knowing land was much further away.

Not funny at all, and makes very disturbing reading.

Not funny at all, and makes very disturbing reading.

But fascinating and real. Unlike some of the works of fiction mentioned above. It was the little bit of detail that brought it all home, like the individuals who, when rescued, had a few finger bones in their pocket that they were not prepared to give up and continued to suck and gnaw at, even when offered other food.
