Coming Soon: Gucci’s Gender-fluid Collection

According to the fashion news, Gucci will soon add a gender-fluid collection to their website under the heading of Gucci MX.

For the prices they ask, I’ll buy another car first. But where high fashion goes, the rest of the industry follows ... Sooner or later.

In the meanwhile, plenty of clothing manufacturers and retailers are going bankrupt so they’re offering some crazy discounts!

I'm not sure this is relevant or helpful to the issue of cis-gendered men having the option to wear skirts as a clothing option. I am not remotely "gender fluid" and, unlike transsexualism (which is of course a real phenomenon), I am not even sure that "gender fluid" is even a thing. By declaring certain clothes as being gender fluid, that is no different to declaring them as men's or women's in that they, by definition, exclude those who are not in that group, i.e. it is assigning gender identity to clothes which only serves to limit other people's options.

I am not pessimistic about this, however, as I might be wrong and it may open up possibilities. Nevertheless, I suspect the whole idea of gender fluidity is a fad which Gucci is buying in to because that adds the impression that they are at the cutting edge of fashion, and it is a fad which will pass in due course, at which point the lines of garments they are assigning as such will disappear.

As Trans is today's thing, I suspect that Stu is right-that gender fluid clothes will be just a fad. A fad that will soon fade away, and not be helpful for MIS.

Seems like a nice all-encompassing description to me; maybe it won't achieve full popular adaptation, but hey -- no foul, no harm; one more bit of exposure to opening the gender barriers.

I think most of us here could accurately be called "gender non-conforming". That's a fairly similar phrase to "gender-fluid" for many, I'd think. I think we can sort of confuse the phrases and gain more acceptance of men wearing skirts.

I like to think of my clothing choice as being practical. Function outweighs form.

I'm with you.

I don't need to reason about my skirt wearing other than it is practical and very comfortable. Maybe this attitude makes my life somewhat boring but I'm fine without the extra ballast. ;)

I personally think this is a huge step in the right direction. The big fashion houses are finally realising that the guard is changing, and that the up and coming generations do not want to be put in a box labelled male or female and restriction what you can and cannot wear. It is nothing but a social construct that is now rightfully being challenged. Of course, the other motivating factor is £s, shillings and pence, because in being able to market clothes to up to 50% of the population who never considered wearing skirts and dresses, they can make a lot of money. I actually couldn't care less if somebody labelled me as "gender fluid" or not when I am out and about in a skirt and heels. If the trend makes it more "normal" for men to have complete freedom as women do to wear whatever they want, I am all for it if it breaks down barriers. Although I identify as being male, and always will do, what is nice about gender fluidity is that it recognises that everyone is on a spectrum and that it doesn't matter where you are on it. You just need to have the freedom to be who you are. That's it.

My prediction is that this will likely be just another load of massively over-priced "unisex" clothes that will hit the catwalks and garner attention, then some of these will be available in a handful of exclusive boutiques, and then the fad will pass.

We have been here before.

We most certainly have, but having been through several iterations of this, I can tell you it's not just fashion runway novelty. Millennials, by and large, do not see gender in the rigid Male vs. Female way that you do; as Steamman said, Millennials see gender along a spectrum. A major university, Brown I believe it was, recently replaced fixed choices for gender with a wide open blank; they got back over 500 distinct identity names. A far cry from Male, Female.

I don't know if a large number of men will ever wear skirts and frankly don't care just so long as I don't get static for wearing them in public ... oh wait, my default clothing choice for nearly all occasions, including church and work, is a dress and I don't get static -- except from my brother -- for doing so.

Lighten up! Live a little.

I'm with you on this, Dave. I also don't care if skirts don't become common wear among men as long as I get the acceptance and respect when I wear one. Incidentally, I wore a skirt every day, all day while I was in lock down and as a category 2 ( diabetic, raised blood pressure and qualifying for free flu innoculations ) she discouraged me from leaving the house at the height of the infection. She moaned occasionally but in general bore the sight well. I said that when I did get back to work I would wear a skirt on odd-numbered dates and shorts/trousers on even-numbered dates. A couple of times she has told me to wear a skirt as she didn't mind. Is that progress? I certainly hope so.

Having looked at the pictures available on recent shows, I guess that de Corona/Covid-19 made the prediction into wishfull thinking.

I agree, I don't particular care if MIS becomes common. And even if it does, I suspect that would be after my life time (I am 63 years old). It takes time to break down rigid conventions.

What I think may come to pass during my life:

1. Kilting, of course.

2. A skirted group that is viewed as eccentric. And gain a measure of acceptance, with their non-conventional dress being viewed as okay for them.

BTW, I think acceptance is possible because, unlike Trannies, members aren't into the female impersonator thing.

Transgender people aren't female impersonators and don't like being called that.
