Balenciaga: pants or skirts?

Beautiful as these garments may be in their original Mid-Eastern form, in light, colorful fabrics, they can look hideous in some "Western" renditions in poor-quality elasticized cotton.

But here Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga revisits the ample Saracen garment with wonderful results. An option for those of you who don't dare to go out in skirts yet.

(What is it called in English? a skirt-pant? I'd call them "bombachas")

harem pants, or "hammer" pants (to the younger set).

I'd not call those "harem pants", and from my understanding that particular garment put the upper end of the inseam moderately close to the crotch. Now, "MC Hammer pants" I can see -- that description's accurate. However, I am drawn to the scene in Mary Poppins where Dick Van Dyke is dancing along with animated penguins; it must be an artifact of my age (and an hilarious scene, too, I might add!).

"Harem Pants" ? ? ?
These are correctly called Harem Pants but I think that we pay too much attention to the stereotype
of Barbara Eden in the TV series "I dream of Jeannie".
Those harem pants were almost sheer and were definitely defined as pants with no gathering
of fabric between the legs creating a skirt effect.
Oh I love the magic she could do......!

So: "harem pants", huh? I wonder who wears them more often in a harem, the odalisks, the Kaliph... or the eunuchs :D The "stereotype" Arab trousers are very loose, extremely confortable, with a very low crotch depth. But all that, translated into "Western" design, as I said, may not always be successful.

Some of you might like these drop-crotch pants by Corpus. Maybe I should give them a shot, but my guess is that they'll make me look as if I were wearing diapers.

I prefer Baleciaga's elegant design.

Oh dear. From afar they give the impression you have short stumpy legs.

Those look awful. It looks like a) Diapers, or more acurately B) diapers with a gift.

Guys common just start wearing skirts instead of baggy pants that offer "more freedom". Skirts are far better looking, and feeling.

Hi Pythos,

Long time no hear...

I have to agree and can tell you that one of my (female) colleagues wore some to the office in Barcelona last year. She was told by most of her colleagues that they looked awful and came over to ask whether British girls were wearing them. During the course of the conversation another Brit told her that in English the garmet "is called a craptin because it looks as though you've..." Well, you get the picture. I don't think she ever wore them again.

Have fun,

Ian.

That's the funniest thing I've seen Pythos write in a while but I completely agree with his "Diapers with a gift" comment. That's exactly what they look like. :D :D :D :D :D

Stop! Nappy time! Can't touch this!

I agree those trousers look like the wearer is wearing a nappy. I think I'll stick with skirts :) - I can't see why else you'd want that low crotch other than comfort, which a skirt provides much better. I agree the traditional Arabic versions of harem trousers look cooler. Each to their own though of course.
