Little Great Kilt? Advice and opinions please.

Post by Max Caswell »

I wore my St. Patricks Ebay cheapo to the Cowboy Roundup yesterday, actually got a request for a photo. Due to the few, and unironed, pleats, it strangely resembles the skirt portion of the great kilt, no sharp pleat lines, but flowing material down from the sewn in waist pleats. Rather than a pleat-centric design, the few pleats in this cheap kilt just flow down, unironed, no real pleat at all.

Two reasons: 1. I like the retro look 2. Those who know state that loss of heat occurs with the swishing of pleats. It gets to -40F here, I want a warm, but stylish, kilt that will carry me as deep into the freeze as I can go, which means fewer pleats.

What I'm asking for is suggestions, design, etc, as well as how to pull it off, for a quality wool kilt that would resemble the skirt part of a great kilt.

I figure probably no more than maybe three yards, although I'll order 4 at least, maybe 2 yards and sewn together in middle. Might even consider double wrapping 10 ounce, thinking outside of the box to come up with a retro-original look.

Thanx in advance for your help on this.

BTW, I'm a 33.5 true waist.

Hi Max
Do an internet search for tartan straight skirt. It would have to be custom made to fit a mans frame, of course.

Thanks for the info, Mike. Found this great site that breaks it all down.

ello Max!

Try looking at this site http://www.celticcroft.com . I believe they may have something like what you're looking for It's called the "little phillebeg" (don't trust my spelling on that one! LOL!). The Celtic Croft is a great place to shop for all things kilt related and good folks too! I've been doing business with them for years and never had a serious problem. By the by they have some beautiful kilt pins.

Hope you find what you're looking for.

Bill,

I think you meant to send us (or at least, Max) to this site.

Have fun,

I have enough lines on my face to use the skin cream.

Tony, at Stillwater Kilts, told me their heavyweight 100% wool kilts are around 16 oz. Probably more in my price range for wool if I'm going to buy. A horse sat on me and granted me an early retirement on a fixed income, so pennies are worth more than they used to be.

PS-August 2, 2014-Found some woven wool Blackwatch tartan, maybe 11 ounce at a used store here in the middle of nowhere, believe it or not. Also some real linen for lining. Just enough, I think for a "little great kilt" I hope to design and sew soon.
